How to Jailbreak Verizon iPhone with iOS Version 4.2.10 Using Redsn0w.

Update Aug. 15, 2011: Many commenters have noted issues with this jailbreak. Please be patient as we attempt to diagnose the problem.

Note: To jailbreak another iPhone version, visit my comprehensive article on how to jailbreak an iPhone.

This tutorial contains jailbreak instructions for both Windows and Mac users, using Redsn0w.

Warning: This is a tethered jailbreak, which means that you will need to redo the jailbreak each time your iPhone reboots (you will not lose your data each time.)

Windows & Mac Users

Required:

  1. Verizon iPhone 4
  2. Firmware: 4.2.10 (check your version in Settings » General » About)
  3. iTunes 10.4
  4. Download iOS 4.2.9 IPSW (iPhone 4 (Verizon)) — Update: Windows users must rename the .zip file to .ipsw in order for it to work.
  5. Download Redsn0w 0.9.8b4 (Windows or Mac)

Jailbreak Instructions

1. Open Redsn0w, click Browse and select the iOS 4.2.9 file that you previously downloaded.

2. Click Install Cydia and hit Next.

3. With your iPhone off and the USB cable plugged in, click Next.

4. Follow the on-screen instructions to put your iPhone in DFU mode. Your iPhone will restart and be fully jailbroken.

5. Note: This is a tethered jailbreak, meaning you will have to redo the jailbreak each time that you reboot your iPhone. To do so, simply click the “Just Boot Tethered Right Now” option in Redsn0w.

Was your jailbreak successful? Please post questions and suggestions in the comments.

  2. Didn’t work for me either, I don’t think there is a workable version after researching. Must wait for an update i think.

  3. this works perfectly, however everything i want to restart with the tethered option it freezes and i end up having to restore the phone which makes everything downloaded from cydia pointless since most have to restart springboard or reboot. if i restart spring board, it just loads forever. i left it on all night, and this morning i ended up just rebooting and restoring again. am i doing something wrong or is this known?

  4. Okay so I got it to work the first time, and then I installed something from Cydia that told me to reboot my iPhone. So I did, and redid the jailbreak. But now I can’t do anything. It freezes with the Apple logo or the Pineapple logo. :\

  6. Yeah, I’ve been trying this all day. Not working I even tried redsnow b3,b4,and b7. All with the same results. I keep getting an unexpected error message. My phone (it is off) won’t go to the itunes plug in screen it just goes right to the apple, tirns on, and launches itunes.

If anyone knows anything help me out.

  7. This is my first time jailbreaking an iphone ever, followed the instructions and it worked flawlessly the very first time…iPhone 4 4.2.10 CDMA, Verizon. Maybe it’s just luck.

  8. hey everyone. I was reading the comments when my iphone was rebooting. It rebooted but someone said something about my cydia app being a white square. Mine was like that too. started just find though.

    THIS FIXES THE CYDIA PROBLEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!

follow the onscreen instructions then do this.

you device should start with cydia as a blank square. What you need to do is start the jailbreaking process again except when you get to the check boxes part (it starts with instal cydia), uncheck install cydia and check the box that says “Boot tethered mode now” or something like this. Once you do this my phone had a pineapple with a bit out of it. then it started. email me if you ahve any questions. gascon33david@gmail.com

    Hope this clears things up!!!

  9. Cydia wouldnt open for me, just a blank square on my menu. Everything else seemed to work though. Greenpoison did the exact same thing when I tried.

  10. I guess I am one of those luck one. After 20 tries, yes 20…I was able to jailbreak my Verizon iphone 4 iOS 4.2.10. One change I made around the 13th try was to connect iphone directly to my iMAC 27 rather than to external ubs port. However, that didn’t work in the first few try..but finally went through. I can now have my MyFii back even for a short period of time since I am sure Verizon will follow ATT footstep fairly soon.

  11. Just so everyone knows, 4.2.10 will not jailbreak! 🙁 the initial jailbreak with redsn0w will work, but once you try rebooting, the phone will freeze and the only option is to restore. so, unfortunately for us, we’ll have to wait until this is fixed or once ios 5 is released 🙁

  12. Sorry to those who are having trouble with this jailbreak.
If your iPhone is not properly restarting or has some other issue due to this jailbreak, I would recommend restoring it in iTunes, as per these instructions: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1414

The above instructions will restore your iPhone to an updated, non-jailbroken state.

I’ve updated this post with a warning message while I look for better instructions for jailbreaking iPhone 4.2.10.

  14. It would be helpful to let people know they must rename the 4.2.9 iOS Zip file to a .ipsw file in order for Redsn0w to see and use it.
