How do I PERMANENTLY delete and erase sms/text messages from my iPhone 4?

Question Posted Thursday March 10 2011, 8:37 pm

I was looking at some things on my Iphone 4 and saw some old text messages from my ex on the spotlight search. I was in awe because I thought I deleted those messages but apparantly you can see them on the spotlight search :/ lets just say it was a bad breakup and everytime i see his name i get bad memories. I searched on google for hours trying to figure out how to delete text messages on my hard drive but the only thing i found was deleting EVERYTHING on my phone (restoring it) but I really don't want to do that because i have so much music and it would take forever to put it all back. (i've had to go through this awhile ago and it wasn't fun)

so my question is.. is there any way i can delete this text messages permanently? remember- they are on the hard drive. they aren't on the actual text app screen. like i deleted it from the texting app (where the texts are green and gray) i deleted those but the texts are still on the hard drive/spotlight search. anyway i can delete these without deleting everything?

PS: in case you didn't get the clue, it was a bad breakup. meaning i dont want to text him and get the past texts up in order to delete them. i tried deleting his number but they still show up! help!!

oh and don't tell me to go to the spotlight menu and remove messages from the list.. that won't delete them. it will just hide them. i want to permanently delete them..

We all want to delete the SMS messages we get on our iPhones sometimes. Whether that's because you want to keep your Messages app tidy or because a message had something in it you don't want someone else to see, a simple swipe usually takes care of things.
Before you start camping out in the mile long line at the store you're going to buy your new one from, follow these simple steps to make sure that every trace of you and your life has been wiped.

You can directly remove it on your iPhone by follow the next steps:

"Settings" -> "universal" -> "Restore" -> "Erase All Content and Settings" -> "Erase iPhone".

Or you can use iPhone Data Eraser to wipe it. [Link](Mouse over link to see full location) iPhone/iPad/iPod Data SafeEraser is the perfect "erase" application that special designed for iOS Device to permanently wipe all personal information. It uses US Military spec over-writing technology so as to render the data unrecoverable. So, your device can return to a clean slate state before you donate, resell, or trade it in.

you can Tap Settings > General > Reset > Erase all Content and Settings or you can use a three-party eraser---iPhone Data Eraser. It has three levels to clear data destruction and prevents personal data from being recoverable. You can have a try.

Remove Messages from Spotlight Search - Your deleted SMS messages can`t appear in a Spotlight search if Spotlight isn`t looking for them in the first place. You can control what apps Spotlight searches in and which it ignores, so you can stop it from searching Messages. To do this: From your home screen, tap Settings Tap General Scroll about halfway down the screen and tap Spotlight Search Scroll to the bottom of the screen and tap Messages to uncheck it. Now, when you run a Spotlight search on your phone, SMS messages won`t be included in the results.

I recently sold my iPhone 4s and followed the erase all content route but didn't stick long enough to see it through, and I found some iPhone data recovery app can restore deleted data from iPhone without backup files, so, I think we have to permanently erase everything from iPhone device before selling it, some “Deleted operation” really doesn’t erase all the data and it still out there, you cannot it.

Sorry to tell you that as of yet, there isn't a good answer.

What is happening is that spotlight builds a database of the messages, and when you delete them, they stay in the search db. :-(

Apple knows about this problem, and as of now, as far as I can find, offers no solution except the one you already know about.

If you took the chance to jailbreak your iPhone, there may be a solution for you. It involves deleting certain directories/folders from the internal memory, which will force the phone to rebuild the search database.

Here is a link to the active discussion on this:

[Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

... that is the official Apple support forum, so I would look quickly at page 2 of that thread before Apple takes down the info on the jailbroken hack to fix this.

I am sorry the breakup was bad. I hope you recover sooner than later. One last thought: If the only way to get rid of the messages forever is to reset and re-upload your music... isn't it worth it? It would be for me.

Good luck!
