Civita di Bagnoregio

Landscape Civita di Bagnoregio A handful of homes stands on this fascinating hilltop, which dominates the valley below. In "upper Tuscia", between Viterbo and Orvieto, this ancient town has held on to its medieval air, seemingly unperturbed by the passage of time. Linked to the modern world by just one long and narrow bridge, the visitor can cross, on foot, to enter the town through Porta del Cassero, the only gate to the city still standing. The church in Piazzetta di San Domenico dates back to the eleventh century. From the edges of the town, the visitor has a stunning panoramic view of the region, famous for its "calanchi" - the cliffs of tufo created by centuries of erosion.
While Civita is a veritable oasis of peace and quiet, the Etruscan hilltop also offers a variety of events of interest throughout the year.

Here are a select few:
First Sunday in June and second Sunday in September, "La Tonna", a fair with a procession through Civita and a jockey-driven donkey race.
August, "Civit'arte", theater, dance and music performances (info: +39 0761 793231).
October, Chestnut Festival, with roasted chestnuts distributed around town.
December 26 / January 1 / January 6, crèche scene with over 50 actors, in costume.
More cultural events are held in the surrounding towns of Lubriano, Montefiascone, Celleno, Castiglione in Teverina, Civitella d'Agliano, Bolsena, Betriolo, Castel Cellesi...
