History:The EJMAS was founded at the end of 1999 by Kim Taylor (chief instructor of the University of Guelph Iaido Club, and holds renshi seven dan rank in Iaido) and Joseph R. Svinth (author and martial arts research). The journal was then expanded to include other forms of martial activities including non-lethal combatives, theatrical combatives and the Western martial arts slant, with the introduction of the
Journal of Western Martial Art (JWMA) and the
Journal of Manly Arts: European and Colonial Combatives, 1776 - 1914 (JManly).
The related journal entitled the
Artes Martiales Occidentales has a similar purpose as the JWMA, except that the articles submitted are peer-reviewed.
