Has anyone actually bought one of their 27x40in reprints?  I'd love to know how they look.  It is a good quality reprint, at least?

T

Depends on what you get. Their reprints for current originals are very close to the real thing, eg, Dark Knight, Twilight, Sin City, Spiderman and other contemporary junk food are very near the mark with small deviations in size. As for their prints, I have a J. Dean print from them, a scene from GIANT I got in a trade; laughable, just an image taken from web and printed as you would at home.

I've hated Moviegoods since I was a newbie.

This cracked me up. High 5.

But what about the originals they sell?  From what I've heard, they have many certifiable originals in stock.

They take many of our images from our site, hire college kids to Photoshop the watermark off, and then blow them up and sell them. I guess there is a market for such low quality images. But some people don't read the fine print and think they are getting originals, and sometimes you could buy the originals for a price similar to what they charge for repros!

Ive bought from them, but only originals, my taste isnt really what people would make fakes of any usually, I have had no problem with them, except a few where REALLY over graded, however when I talked to them, the refunded straight a way and let me keep the poster/s
Id think of them as a supermarket, rather than someone who knows and cares. They are cheap, and just churn it out.
You can go to a local Gourmet Deli or go to (dont know american supermarkets names) Coles.
One you get quality, the other, is cheaper, and mayby lower quality.
make your choice, moviegoods, and I havent bought from them in years, dont care, sell mainly low grade posters, and low grade repsos, (I hear they are fuzzy)  but I dont think they are crooks.
I dont like Macdonalds so I dont go there,
if they steal images from, a site, and reprint, well, you took a picture of a poster you don't own the copywrite for, it may be a grey area, but really, we all know what the deal is with selling posters, or second hand books or whatever, Moviegoods always (as far as I know) describe when its a repro, they may be bad at packing, and grading, but its as I said a fast food joint, its cheap, fast and easy, and usually tastes like shit,

(High-fiving Carson from across the country.  In my geekish way.)

As for Moviegoods taking images, the difference between Moviegoods copying images and our copying poster pics is that we do it to show others what we're talking about or to pass on information. As I understand the law in this area (Holiday would know more about this) the use of images in the public domain is allowable when it isn't being sold or used to make money by anyone who isn't the owner.  Even though Moviegoods does sell some originals and does label prints as "prints" on their website, when they actually send out the posters to you, what they send isn't always the original you ordered and if you don't know the difference or if you're new to the hobby, you won't know what you're getting.  Plus, to the new collector, "prints" and the several other euphemisms used for something that's not original doesn't mean anything if you have no idea that poster reproductions/reprints actually exist.

Moviegoods tried to bamboozle me twice and I caught them in it.  Once is an accident.  Twice is a pattern.  Imagine the new poster collector who doesn't have an inkling what ZigZag is, or what a "print" is, or what a reprint is or what any of the pitfalls in this crazy poster world are.

Thanks, Steve.  But now the image that's shown is just one big mean black square that reads:  "Visit Creepygif.com to view this GIF animation".   And when you go there, it's the same big mean black square.  How rude of them.

Their supplied code for you to use is wrong.

To make it animated, had to change:
http://www.creepygif.com/images/thumb/758.jpg

to say this:
http://www.creepygif.com/images/full/758.gif

Though they also prevent hot linking so the black message remains. I'll edit my previous message to remove the horrible black hot linking image...

So, I moved it to my site where it works and looks better there (yeah it is quite funny):

What is not commonly known is how some dealers buy their supply of supposedly original posters wholesale from Moviegoods.
Jeannie

Well I can safely say I am not one of those dealers, and proud to admit it. I agree with what Jeannie was saying about the new collectors not knowing what an original and what a reproduction is. I was pretty vocal about MG in the past, on the MPF as well. It is rather disheartening when you think about the number of collectors who were taken in by all of their Dark Knight reprinted garbage (and other posters) thinking they have originals, when in reality they have knock-offs in their collections.

Disney and Fox have sued MovieGoods and its officers for copyright infringement of their posters.  Attached are the Complaint and Answer.  They're fairly legalistic.  The interesting part of the Answer is the laundry list of affirmative defenses that the defendants assert.  Apparently they don't have any licensing agreement to print or sell these.

The parties have a mandatory settlement conference soon before a lower-level("magistrate") judge, which is routine in federal courts.

Here's the Joint Report to the Court in the MovieGoods case.  No huge news but this report boils down the legal issues and positions of the parties:

How did you hear that?   I checked the case docket and nothing critical has happened. Discovery ends in September and trial is set for December 14.  However, I can't imagine they can afford a fight against Disney, especially when they have no viable defenses.

The Canada branch or Vegas? I think if they would have left everything in Canada this lawsuit would have never happened, an international copyright battle would be a tough one.

I doubt Disney will agree to let them continue selling second-rate reproductions of their copyrighted works.

News on the Moviegoods front.  As you'll recall, Disney & 20th Century Fox sued Moviegoods for copyright infringement.

Disney & 20th Century Fox filed a "motion for summary judgment" a couple of months ago.  (Follow the highlighted text to read it yourself.)  Disney & 20th claimed it was undisputed that Moviegoods was reproducing their 11x17 posters without authorization and therefore MovieGoods had violated its copyrights.

Moviegoods opposed the motion and claimed that they had not reproduced the posters at issue but had bought them directly from theaters (which had received them as promotional items from Disney) and therefore under the "first sale" doctrine they had not violated copyright.

Their response is interesting. They claim they sell $6 million of posters annually.  They claim they purchased most of their original cache of posters from a collector in Canada.

Looks like all parties have agreed to settle the case.  Moviegoods had agreed not to reproduce Disney & 20th Century Fox posters but will be allowed to continue to sell posters obtained under the "first sale" exception.

Interestingly, Moviegoods wanted the settlement to remain sealed because "others" could "misconstrue" the settlement:

The Judge denied MovieGood's request and the proposed consent order is public.

I checked the Moviegoods site and - shockingly - looks they are not selling repro Disney posters anymore.

That's great news.  Now if Sony, WB, Universal and Paramount would follow suit, it would once and for all kill and bury Moviegoods like a cockroach.  One can only hope.

Old topic, new development.

Looks like MovieGoods has dropped all of its reprints and seemingly gone legit.

Selling very few 27x40s and most are labeled "reproductions."

Mostly selling photos and 11x17 posters nowadaways.

I wonder if they're in financial trouble....
