Welcome to Arabic Calligraphy Design. I practice traditional and contemporary Arabic calligraphy, and do custom calligraphy for tattoos, design work, and original pieces. All my work is hand-written, I do not use computer fonts in my designs. To get started, have a look at the Styles page to see some of the different styles I normally work in, or if you’re interested in a tattoo, click the Tattoos page. When you’re ready, send me an email at arabic.calligrapher@gmail.com, and we can work together on what you’d like designed.

Works on Paper

If you are interested in commissioning a piece of original calligraphy either for yourself or for a gift, I would be happy to work with you on the design. You can either request a customized piece of calligraphy or browse my currently available works.

Cost depends on three factors: number of words, paper size, and bordering options (plain piece of paper or decoratively bordered and mounted on archival board). You can also choose options for style, layout, borders, and goldwork.

I normally ship the work unframed and worldwide shipping is free (I’m based in America.) If you would like to have it shipped framed, I am happy to do that, but there is an added cost for the framing and the shipping.

I use only traditional, hand-treated materials in my calligraphy. I use handmade papers that I have treated with a coating called ahar and burnished with agate until they are at a state where they can accept the ink. The process takes many hours per sheet and is the traditional way of preparing paper for Islamic calligraphy that goes back more than a millennium. I can also border the piece with decorative marbled paper, made from my own handmade paints that I float on a thickened water. The ink I use is traditional soot ink that has been used in Arabic calligraphy for more than a millennium. The paper is archival and the ink is lightfast.

I mount the piece on archival book board with bookbinders glue and then press it in a book press to ensure no wrinkles or bubbles occur. I typically border the piece with decorative, colored, or marbled paper, but that is something you and I work out together based on personal preference.

At the moment I am only using traditional scripts for original works, meaning I am no longer doing zoomorphic or figural calligraphy for originals. I made this decision because I would like to do works that let the calligraphy stand out and speak for itself, and, while they are striking, the figural/tree/zoomorphic pieces really take away from that, in my opinion.

If you tell me what you are considering, I would be happy to give you an exact quote. Please write to me at arabic.calligrapher@gmail.com for all inquiries, or via the form below.
