Archives.com Awards Grant to Preserve Oral History
We're excited to announce the most recent Archives.com Grant recipient: the Bloomingdale Public Library in Bloomingdale, Illinois. The library will use the grant to further their oral history project, which aims to record and preserve the memories of Bloomingdale community members.The Village of Bloomingdale, home to about 22,000 people, is located 28 miles west of Chicago. The library's oral history project will be especially valuable to Bloomingdale as it will preserve memories of older community members that might otherwise be lost forever. The project, which had been delayed due to budget constraints, will be able to continue thanks to the $1,000 grant. Read More »
Archives Awards Grant to Preserve Historical Documents in Africa
The latest Archives.com Grant was awarded to The Center for African American Genealogical Research, Inc. (CAAGRI), a non-profit organization that works to reconnect African families torn apart by the slave trade. CAAGRI's methods incorporate both traditional genealogy and DNA studies, which will help people around the world to trace their roots back to Africa.They also are engaged in an ongoing project to digitize the holdings of the the Public Records and Archives Administration (formerly the National Archives) in Ghana. Archives Grant Helps Group to Digitize Jewish Historical Records
Archives has awarded the latest $1,000 dollar grant to the Jewish Genealogical Society of Washington State (JGSWS). The grant funds will allow the organization to begin a project to digitize the Jewish Transcript, a newspaper which holds a wealth of information on the Washington State Jewish Community. This is an endeavor they've wanted to begin for many years, but never had sufficient resources before today.The Jewish Transcript (now called JT News) has been in publication for 120 years. Archives Supports Sullivan's Island Historic Cemetery
At the NGS Conference Archives gave participants the opportunity to apply for a $1,000 dollar grant to fund a family history project. We received over 100 applications, but could only pick one. We were particularly struck by one proposal submitted by Linda Smith, archivist for the Sullivan's Island Historic Cemetery Association.The Sullivan's Island Historic Cemetery is located on Sullivan's Island, South Carolina near Charleston. Linda notes, "My family has lived on Sullivan's Island for over 100 years. This old cemetery serves as a gateway to the island history which is being lost as the population on the island changes." Archives Grant Award Announced At NGS 2011
On Saturday, one lucky NGS participant was chosen as the recipient of a special Archives.com Grant award. The winner was Linda D. Smith of Sullivan's Island Historic Cemetery Association. Sullivan's Island is located off the coast of South Carolina, not far from downtown Charleston. This small non-profit organization is committed to the preservation of an historical graveyard, which is the resting place for a number of Civil War soldiers.The organization will use the $1,000 dollar award for much needed tombstone restoration, grave identification, and fencing.
