Viele Bücher sind über die Jahrzehnte von verschiedenen Verlagen herausgebracht worden. In der Liste ist jeweils die letzte Druckausgabe angegeben. Die meisten Bücher von Alan Lomax sind noch erhältlich, wenn nicht im Buchhandel, dann in Antiquariaten. Zudem liegen einige vergriffene Werke auch in digitalisierter Fassung vor.

Shirley Collins, die kurz mit Alan Lomax liiert war und seinen Heiratsantrag schließlich ablehnte, erzählt von ihren Erfahrungen. Sie gibt nicht nur einen detaillierten Einblick in die Arbeitsweise von Lomax. Es gelingt ihr auch eindrucksvoll, die Persönlichkeit des „Songhunters“ darzustellen und zu ergründen.

In der Biografie des Vaters erfährt der Leser etwas über den Mann, der Alan Lomax prägte. Viele Jahre arbeiteten Alan und sein Vater in verschiedenen Projekten immer wieder zusammen. Er übertrug seine Liebe für den Folk auf seinen Sohn und vermittelte ihm wichtige Grundlagen für sein späteres Leben als „Songhunter“.
