JPM MS230 cylinder heads
« on: April 10, 2011, 02:22:02 PM »
I thought I'd post pics of some cylinder heads that I'm going to try, in case anyone else is interested as well.

These are JP Motorsport MS230 heads made in Sweden and are designed to be a "street head" first, but also can be raced at various levels, depending on the other parts that you select, CR, fuel, etc.

I only ordered the heads for now, not the 5-bolt rockers, throttle bodies, etc.  Most 2-bolt rockers will fit as well, so I'm re-using my Scat 1.4's.  These heads will go on the 2332 cc, in my street Beetle, which I also like to race on weekends in the 1/4-mile.  This season, I hope to race at Calgary, Medicine Hat, Edmonton, Saskatoon and maybe Mission again.

The "230" stands for 230 CFM which is the guaranteed flow at 0.550-570" lift (14 mm), but they will flow 240+ at higher lifts (eg. 0.629").  They've been used in Finland, Sweden, Norway, etc for over 5 years and are a very popular head for those who need to drive their cars long distances (with good cooling) and also race.  The heads have 10 cooling fins on both the top and bottom.

The 5-bolt rockers are made by the same Swedish factory that used to forge the Gene Berg rockers many years ago.

great heads ,looks like teh comp eliminators with more fins .
what i found when running CE on the street was it was very important to get all the cooling tin that directs the air around and below the heads as there is no passage ways in the heads to allow air to pass through them as in a stock head .
also on teh bottom tin the one that curves around the pushrods and bolts to the lower part of the sump i made a small deflector to redirect some flow back up to the bottom of the head ,so far so good but the car is not driven any excessive street miles.
also your low speed port velocity is allot less so you may need to watch your base ignition timing as well as your progression jetting off idle may need some reworking .as the lower vacuum signal can give some issues .

Thanks for the suggestions, Jim.  I will put the Beetle back on the chassis dyno and try some tuning this spring. You're correct the MS230 shares some characteristics with the CE (and SF) heads and uses the same manifolds...which might require some porting

Here's a quick comment from Johannes about why he went to the trouble of having new heads manufactured.  I was considering the CE, but wanted more daily driver qualities, so I thought I'd give it a try:

Why make a new head?

No1: cooling is very important on a streetdriven vw.
Looking at several high perf heads on the market which are capable
of lots of power they all have less fins than the original head. Why?
shouldn't it be the opposite?.
Because when you sandcast, the mold will break, if you try to cast
that many thin fins. The only way to get a big cooling area when you
sandcast is to machine the fins afterwards which, of course, is very
expensive.

No2:Was to make a head that you wouldn't have to put a lot of work into,
to get good numbers.
Therefore, I was spending weeks on making ports
with high flow and velocity and then let my model carpenter copy
the ports and make a core fit
into the mold. This was the hardest part to copy my handported port
into the casting.

No3:As the rpm is going up, the valve lift and spring pressure is rising and
the demands on a non-flexable rockershaft is needed, that's why I
made the five stud rockershaft. The two main studs are still in the
same position which means that you can still use Pauter,GB,CB etc.

Facts about MS 230:

Update:  Been driving the Beetle for a couple weeks now, with the new JPM heads.  My seat-of-the-pants sense is that there is more acceleration with this combo, even though my CR is down to 9.3:1.  Hope to get on the chassis dyno later.  We were rained out at the Race City track (Calgary) again last Friday, so I hope to try again on June 10th.  Here's a short video testing my linkage with the shorter manifolds and adjustments:

Also found a couple videos from Castrol Raceway, Edmonton with my previous best races in the 12.9's.  Hoping the heads will bring that down to mid or even low 12's this year:

Hi Neil,

How are those JPM heads working out for you?? Still Happy with them??

I know its an old post but I thought I'd ask as I'm interested in them and was looking at them on the JPM website.

Cheers Rene

They're working out just fine so far, after 4+ years.

I had Darren fly-cut them a couple years ago to reduce the chamber size and get the CR up over 10:1.  He also shortened the exhaust guides, as I was using the terrible Webcam 226 camshaft for a while...with it's bad overlap which took a toll on the ends of the guides.

So far, I have just over 12,000 miles in total, as well as 300+ trips down the drag strip. I changed the valve springs to VW650 (CB) last year because the original springs were starting to lose a bit of strength.

I seem to see the same operating temperatures as a stock engine, the only exception is when I hotlap at the track for several races in a row...but that's because I race without the fan belt:)
