Rules for Measurements.

  1. Including information in both Imperial and Metric units is required, when applicable.
    1. BGT provides a handy Converter.  The converter provides standard abbreviations.
    2. Standard abbreviations and unit measurements should be followed when possible.
      1. Always abbreviate units when reporting numerical information.
        1. Example: "Each pole weighs 10 oz (283 g)."
      2. The singular abbreviation is always acceptable, for singular or plural values; some non-metric units are frequently used in the plural form (e.g. oz, lb, in), and therefore that too is acceptable.
        1. Example: "10 oz" or "4 lb" are OK, and preferred.
        2. Example: "10 ozs" or "4 lbs" are also OK.
        3. Example: "10 m" is OK, but 10 meters cannot be "10 ms"
      3. You do not need a period (".") after a unit abbreviation.
        1. Example: "4 oz" is better than "4 oz."
      4. Always put a space between the number and unit.  See examples above.
      5. Spell out the unit as a word when using it in a non-numerical context.
        1. Example: "All measurements were made in millimeters unless otherwise indicated."
      6. When starting a sentence with a number and unit, both must be spelled out as words (this is something to avoid, if possible), e.g., "One thousand six hundred and eighty-seven kilograms of beef were turned into jerky."
      7. Percent is not abbreviated, but is symbolized by the familiar "%" symbol.
      8. For a list of unit equivalents, see the table at the bottom of this chapter.
      9. When including measurements, use units that are appropriate for the scale.
        1. When giving general measurements keep conversions general.
          1. Example: "5,000 ft (1,500 m) peaks" not "1,524 m"
          2. Example: "1,500 m (5,000 ft) peaks" not "4,921 ft"
        2. When giving specific measurements, keep conversions specific.
          1. Example: "5 ft (1.52 m)"
          2. Example: "5 m (16.4 ft)"
        3. When appropriate, round to two decimal places.  (See above example.)
          1. When giving very precise measurements, such as those for machined parts, it may be necessary to provide further decimal places for accuracy.  In no case give more than four decimal places for any number.
        4. Use similar scale in conversions.
          1. In the example above, "5 ft", 1.52 m or 152 cm are acceptable to the scale.  You should not use 1,520 mm.
          2. In the example above, "5 m", 16.4 ft or 5.47 yd are acceptable to the scale.  You should not use 197 inches.
  2. Currency values should not be converted.
    1. Currency values for MSRP need not be converted but if they are, the date of the conversion should be noted. i.e. "MSPR: 100 euros (US $106.44 on April 5, 2017)
