Godric, by Frederick Buechner, A+

What’s lost is nothing to what’s found, and all the death that ever was, set next to life, would scarcely fill a cup.
- Frederick Buechner,
Godric

With the help of the trip Lindsay and I took to St. Louis, I was able to finish Frederick Buechner's masterpiece, Godric. The book is rough, beautiful, ascetic, and wanton in turns, as Buechner gives spectacular voice to a man's epic search for God. Grace wars with self-redemption, vision with loneliness, hot-bloodedness with seemingly icy virtue.

I'd like to write a review, but I know I probably won't get to it with the backlog of other stuff I want to post about, so I'm awarding Godric a hands-down A+ right now. Highly recommended.

This is the kind of book that will haunt you for months after you read it, if not for a lifetime.

Dude, Godric is great! Fred Buechner is one of my all time favorites. Have you read the Bebb books (Love Feast, Open Heart, Treasre Hunt and Lion Country)? Not Godric, and certainly different/quirky, but good stuff nonetheless. Recommended.

Hey Joel, I've read quite a bit of Buechner, but haven't touched the Bebb stuff because I had the impression they were about an overweight, clownish pastor...sounds like I'll have to pick them up anyway.

Aside from Godric, Buechner's book on the gospel may be my favorite.

I second the Bebb novels. Buechner was the key author that helped bring me back to a life with God. I said, "this is different from what I hear and see in the media, this is a spirituality that inspires taking a journey. The minister who gave me a Buechner book was great.

That sounds awesome; it's totally going on my reading list.

OK, after two endorsements, Bebb is now on my acquisition list.

I think you'll love Godric, Jeffrey. If you post about it be sure and let me know.

I've got a lot of catching up to do here; this post caught my eye as I am a huge fan of Buechner's Telling the Truth. I'll certainly be picking this one up as soon as I possibly can!
