Ski Area Bormio - Skiing in the Italian Alps

Bormio in Italy, with its excellent slopes and lifts, located just a few hundred meters form the centre of town, is justly renowned as the "show-case" of Alpine skiing.

Bormio has hosted the Alpine Skiing World Cup several times. Its pistes were the stage for the 1985 and 2005 World Cup, the annual men’s downhill World Cup, the 1995 Alpine Skiing Finals and the Fis World Cup 2000 and 2008 Finals.

Not that this tradition as a venue for competitive sports means its slopes are suitable only for champion skiers.

Over 50 km of pistes, served by 2 cable cars, 7 chairlifts and 6 skilifts, with a capacity per hour of 20.000 people, are suitable for skiers of all abilities.

Experts who want to test their skills will find pistes with moguls, fast bends and sudden changes in slope steepness.

It is indeed no coincidence that the jet men of the White Circus who meet in Bormio at the end of each year consider the over 4 km stretch on the Stelvio piste as providing the best and most difficult downhill skiing in the world.

The most experienced skiers can also put their skills to the test on the Valbella and Betulle slopes, while anyone looking for a long, but more leisurely panoramic piste to ski down should try the Bimbi al Sole, which is a good 6 km in length.

There is a wide choice of slopes also for beginners, whit easy pistes both at the valley bottom and higher up.

In Bormio it is possible to ski down one of the greatest drops found anywhere in the Alps: without ever needing to take the skis off it is possible to descend from 3.000 to 1225 meter, form the Valletta peak, right into town. The large-scale snow cannon programme guarantees good skiing from as early as December.
