Drug Importation: Cruise Ship Workers Charged

August 12, 2011

Two West Indian cruise ship workers appeared in Magistrates’ Court today [Aug.12] charged with drug importation, with one man pleading guilty while the other defendant pleaded not guilty. Both men were remanded into custody.

ZBM reported two Royal Caribbean Cruise Line employees were charged with importing an estimated 200 grams of cocaine with an estimated street value of just over $52,000.

35-year-old Clarence James from St. Vincent pleaded guilty to importing and conspiring to import 219 grams of cocaine, while 36-year-old Jamaican national Delroy Duncan pleaded not guilty to the same charges.

Crown Counsel Tawana Tannock told the court the drugs were found in the soles of shoes worn by Mr James when he exited the ship earlier this month. A search revealed a small brown package in each shoe.

When questioned, Mr James said that Mr Duncan had asked him to to take them off the ship for him for payment. Mr Duncan admitted knowing Mr James, but denied he gave him drugs to take off the cruise ship.
