PHILADEPHIA the city of brotherly love april 2010

Is it art or is it vandalism?

That's the question graffiti photographer Henry Chalfant says he gets the most. He'll seek to answer it with collaborator Martha Cooper and New York graffiti artist Blade at a Q&A, screening of street art doc Style Wars and signing of the 25th anniversary edition of Chalfant's book Subway Art (Chronicle), which includes 70 additional photographs and a new intro.

"You will see graffiti at its prime and be able to talk to the people who lived through and witnessed it firsthand," says Drexel event coordinator Zeek Weil of the multidisciplinary event produced by the university's Westphal College of Media Arts & Design.

Though Chalfant began his artistic career primarily as a sculptor, he became fascinated with graffiti and started photographing it in the mid-'70s. New York City was facing financial crisis and widespread poverty, but youth culture flourished on brick walls and the sides of trains with relative impunity to punishment. "It seemed that something that had started out as mischief turned into real art," Chalfant says. With director Tony Silver, the photographer produced the film Style Wars to document a clash in aesthetics: graffiti artists vs. the city.

While big corporations can flog people with their opinions through horizon-swallowing billboards, Chalfant argues, "graffiti introduced to the world a venue for youth, especially marginalized youth, to express themselves. Similar to hip-hop, it gave voice to people who did not have other forms of media."

The centerfold of Chalfant's Subway Art is a piece by Blade, the (UNDISPUTED!!!!!!) King of Graffiti. Though his work is now exhibited internationally, Blade fondly recalls his graffiti roots and echoes Chalfant's sentiment. "By the mid-'70s you have thousands of teens not having any trouble with each other, just running around the underground having fun," he says. "Graffiti was a way to express your creativity because all the school programs were being cut at that time." Between 1972 and 1984, Blade says he tagged more than 5,000 train cars.

Want to know how he did it without ever getting arrested? Ask him yourself during the Q&A with Chalfant, Cooper and Blade following the screening. Filmed during the early '80s, Style Wars highlights the heyday of graffiti and the beginnings of hip-hop culture, featuring prominent artists and scene celebs like breakdancer Crazy Legs from the Rock Steady Crew. But the film has seen better days and needs restoration. Particularly inspired audience members are encouraged to make donations to the Style Wars film fund and get their names in the credits of a rereleased edition.

Since the event is meant to celebrate the finest of graffiti culture, Blade suggests you be prepared when you get in line for the book signing. "Don't bring some Sharpie," he says. "Bring me a silver paint marker to sign with."  SPECIAL THANKS TO "CORNBREAD" FOR SPEAKING THAT NIGHT AT THE EVENT!

PARIS.- By commissioning works from the foremost graffiti artists, Alain-Dominique Gallizia has compiled - and continues to compile – the most important painted record of what was, until now, an ephemeral art. Now 300 works have been brought together for an unprecedented project in the history of Art, shown in a world-first exhibition at the Grand Palais.
From the street to the Grand Palais. For the first time ever, this art sauvage is being shown at a Paris cultural institution, in the south-west gallery, undergoing restoration, on the first floor overlooking the nave. This new gallery provides an exceptional 700 square metres of space under the glass-panelled roof of the Grand Palais.
Tags, in which the artist signs their nickname or street name adjoined to their house number (Stayhigh 149, Tracy 168 and many more), first appeared in the 1960s in the US, and were brought to wider public attention on July 21, 1971 when The New York Times ran a seminal story on the tag artist Taki 183.
After the simply-drawn letters of tags came graffiti. This aerosol art sparked a new style of calligraphy, a worldwide cultural challenge, and heated competition between graffiti artists. This new art form was brought to France from New York in 1983 by Bando, who wrote his name on walls around rue du Bac, the birthplace of Parisian graffiti art. From the Stalingrad Métro station to the Louvre, walls old and new around the city were soon covered in art by Skki, Jayone, Spirit, Psyckoze and others.
Each of the 300 works in this exhibition comes from an encounter between the leading T.A.G. (Tag And Graff) artists and Alain-Dominique Gallizia, who has spent the past three years in a constant quest for the last art form of the 20th century. They show how the artists, who were all actively involved in shaping this project, intend leaving an indelible trace of their talent.
All the works follow a unifying and threefold principle: the same format (a horizontal canvas in two parts measuring 60x180cm), the same theme (on the left the artist's signature, and on the right an open interpretation of the theme "Love") and if possible produced in Alain-Dominique Gallizia's studio in Boulogne-Billancourt, which he opened to the artists. The (some would say crazy) objective is to create a comparative record, both artistic and historical, instantaneous and eternal, of this movement.
The Gallizia collection speaks volumes about the energy on the street, where every nationality can express itself from the American pioneers and European stars to the up-and-coming generations in Korea (Reach), Iran (Isba) and Brazil (Nunca). Bubble letters, cloud letters, block letters, chromed signatures, restyled and freestyle cartoon characters… the works at the Grand Palais form a unique and multiple panorama of styles and colors.
Alain-Dominique Gallizia is an architect with a passion for graffiti who grew up between Paris and Provence. He opened his agency in 1984 in Boulogne, specialising in homes for clients who are in many cases also collectors. A chance encounter with a graffiti artist spraying a fence around the site he was working on inspired him to gather traces of this ephemeral street art by inviting artists to leave their mark on history on a two-sided canvas that will never be erased.

This Saturday, the work of 45 artists will be packed into one place. The work displayed will be both comic and graffiti art, and the show, COMnGRAF 2, is a conscious attempt to contrapose the two graphic styles, highlighting the stylistic influence each has on the other.

The show is the brainchild of artist Rob Stull, a veteran of the comic book world, and graffiti writer and comic book inker GRODZ. It is the second in a series that began at the end of May. The first show kept Stull so busy that he never noticed, until he got ready to leave, that it had been raining for most of the night.

This installment is expected to create even more excitement, and renowned artists from both graphic persuasions will be attending—including legendary graffiti artist Blade and comic artist Khary Randolph. Randolph just finished his first season as head character designer for the new Wolverine and the X-Men cartoon series for Fox. For Blade, whose career began in the '70s, graffiti was "just a bunch of kids having fun," he says. Blade has painted more than 5,000 subway cars and claims to be the "only living person since Warhol to make the cover of the Sotheby's catalog." This Saturday, he will be showing a re-creation of a piece he painted on a subway car in 1976. It will be reproduced on the underside of a skate deck, something he's never done before, and the purchaser will also get a framed photo of Blade standing next to the original in '76.

The conflation of comic and graffiti art hadn't yet begun when Blade started painting. "Back then, artists were listening to psychedelic rock," he says. "Nobody was spinning on their head listening to Sly Stone or Janis." The idea behind COMnGRAF, to explicitly highlight the crossover of graffiti and comic art, is something Blade has never seen. "It's a new idea, it should work."

Randolph represents another generation of artist at the show. He says that growing up, "graffiti was all around us," and though he's never written graffiti himself, "it fed into what I do." He's seen shows that featured a wide variety of graphic styles, including graffiti and comic art, but never one like this, designed specifically to celebrate the interconnectedness of the two. As a Boston native, Randolph is excited the show will be taking place here. "Even if it's in a small way, I'm giving back to the town that raised me."

The work of comic artists, Leinil Francis Yu, Ed McGuinness, Sanford Greene and many more will be shown. Graffiti artists T.Kid, Ces, Pose 2, Wane COD, Nic One and many more represent the street. It ultimately will lead to the publishing of a book about the connection of the two forms by True Elements, a publishing LLC founded by Stull.

BLADE AND THE BAZAY JAM BAND - SODA POP
BLADES unreleased 70's and 80's recordings available on CD for the first time.
Article by Jason Ksino Woodward.

Those of you down with graff and Hip Hop culture will know that BLADE was an early New York graffiti pioneer. He painted over 5000 subway cars throughout the early 1970s and his work was featured in documentaries like Style Wars and From Here To Carnesie. Most of his fans dont realise he was also a well known and influential bass player and band leader from the Bronx. His funky style was also found in his fat bass playing for groups like THE FIRST CLASS GOOD TIME BAND and the BAZAY JAM BAND. These groups occasionally toured throughout New York State, but rarely recorded. One box of four track cassette tapes remained for all those years of playing.

Those tapes sat dormant at BLADES apartment for years, occasionally getting played to European art collectors who constantly visit him hounding him for new paintings. Tash and I were visiting BLADE at his NYC Bronx based apartment, to pay our respects and get some old school knowledge. Tash was particularly interested in finding out about the old school female writers. I always dig any old school story from someone who was there. I had made the pilgramage to New York City on four seperate occasions for this very reason.

BLADE has lived there most of his life. New York City born and bred. A true Bronx Bomber. From his window, you can see the trains running. His parents live in an apartment block right next door. Near Dyre Avenue in the Bronx. Well worth the travel to check out the legend and his old school flicks. BLADE bought Tash and I lunch for the local chinese takeaway.... beers, bud and black bean sauce... Looking thru lots of old school flixs and getting some bass guitar tips. To get the party moving he busted out some old tapes. Early recordings..... the tapes were fat psychedelic hard fat funk and early electro bombs from the heart of the Boogie Down Bronx.. That day was one of the high points of both our lives.

THE RECORDINGS TRANSFER
These recordings were made in the late 70's and early 80's. One of the tracks features male vocals reminicent of Tom Jones. BLADE told us that this vocalist was a huge Jones fan. The rest of the tracks are home recordings made in his Bronx apartment. On the 80s recordings a FOSTEX home studio 4 track onto cassette tape was used. Drum programming and keyboards are all by BLADE. That fat bass was played live by Rickenbacker master BLADE.

Once I had permission from BLADE for the recordings I had to find a studio. I spent a couple of days trying various friends I had and then thru the VILLAGE VOICE I tried a bunch of studios. I could not find any studios with the old recording equipment. I had a moment of clarity and I relised I had to take the 4 track recorder down to a studio. So I had to take his old four track down to little studio on the east side lower Manhattan and get the recordings made into protools. A big chunk of trust was needed as I could have easlily hocked the 4 track.

I had the tracks, 11 in total all transferred onto protools. Each track seperated still. I fly back to Australia 3 days later. Once back I gave the recording to Jigsaw Geoff to cut down. Some of these jams were 12 minutes long and often with tape damage in sections. We made copies of a number of tracks and then sent them out to Australias best beats producers- RANSOM, PERIL, JIGSAW GEOFF.

THE RECORDINGS
