From the book GOAL AND OWN GOAL (Goal e autogoal) Reflections on football by Daniela Asaro

Goal e Autogoal - Riflessioni sul calcio

Dedicated to Giacinto Facchetti

This book is dedicated to
Giacinto Facchetti.
For all those “managers”,
who offered me an
incalculable collaboration,
wanting to be the fundamental
di riferimento fondamentale
role model in the general disorientation.
Thanks to Giacinto
for the great sporting and
human qualities.
Great footballing talent,
a great athlete, but above all
a genuine man.
You will always be in the hearts of those
who still believe in the extraordinary
strength of a sporting spirit!

Prologue

“Unconsciously I believe that I have experienced similar thoughts in other times, where the mass of information, especially that televised, and the contradiction of principles and irony of the rules tend to reduce this “to know what we know” like in the last expression of freedom (they tricked us, but at least we know it)” Gian Paolo Ormezzano *.

When I was a young girl starting to practice sport in an agonistic manner, I used to read articles by Gian Paolo Ormezzano and started to reflect; now I can assure that he contributed to the development of my sporting spirit.

I recently contacted him and proved that he hasn’t changed over the years; he continues to be a genuine man, a sportsman, something quite unusual these days. Ormezzano is above all, a journalist who doesn’t evolve from the unreal… he’s a person who continues to be a peoples man, not isolated like many in the ivory towers of the big sports star. He has another very important quality: wisdom of the heart.

Some reflections

One of the gravest problems which afflicts society nowadays, in all fields and which is also present in sport is the united certainty towards self exaltation and the self omnipotence of many people. I will never tire of repeating what is even more terrible when the sporting field is corroded by such “certainties”, due to the fact that its main task is to be the educative role model for so many young people.

After the ovations in the stadiums after a winning match, we may feel like absolute kings, everything is so clear, so sure: the friendships of such important personalities, the smiles of the “famous” … The man, therefore has everything under control, even though not marked by success but “simply” for the wellbeing. Obviously, there is a certainty which is kilometres from the minds of these “Kings”: that not too far away in a market in Kabul, an old man is selling a piece of bread in order to gather a few coins...

Drunken by the applauses, for pleasure and for so many advantages, its presence is not perceived. The “idols” cannot have the human tragedies in mind even less the violence which breaks out in the stadiums. So many words, so many useless decrees, so many vain people “speaking over” the television obviously to have that so adored vision, and to be all prepared with the solutions...
I believe that the fans feel used and are frustrated (above all the present youth), by the football matches which offer them nothing or worse still, lots of bad examples, the violence is a serious matter of an existential unpleasantness. There are fans with “blinkers” that defend the most corrupt clubs and the most ambiguous personalities, often not creating problems in the stadiums, because of their own internal problems of which they may never be freed. Blindly believing in all that is manipulated by the mediums of communication! Many people could do a lot for the sick society, but living submerged in the certainties and the material advantages, they appear as robots without any credible feelings.

Certainties…certainties…certainties… who other than Albert Einstein examined the “mystery” in order to obtain some certainties… his stupendous reflection: “The fairest thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion which stands at the cradle of true art and true science.”
We dare to add: real life lived by genuine men. Here follows a quote by Einstein: “HE WHO KNOWS IT AND CAN NO LONGER WONDER, NO LONGER FEEL AMAZEMENT, IS AS GOOD AS DEAD, A SNUFFED OUT CANDLE”.
To be candles which light up…
I believe that someone “responsible for the works” will be attracted by the verses of W. Blake, if one will read and reread, then at the best one may become a shining candle.

“To see a world in a grain of sand, and a heaven in a wild flower, to hold infinity in the palm of your hand and eternity in an hour”.

William Blake (1757-1827)

Thanks

Thank you for the attention, I hope that you haven’t thrown this book in the rubbish basket. If I didn’t love football as a sport and not appreciate it, as far as human beings or the worst leaders are concerned, then maybe I wouldn’t have created these pages, for the things or persons which we don’t love so much, would only show us indifference.
I hope that one understands that I as well as the players who help me out (which I am very grateful) launch constructive not destructive criticisms. We prefer that the players remain anonymous; on the other hand they themselves had requested this to avoid finding themselves in unpleasant situations. I am sure that, when the players sign their name, probably on a future book, at this moment, it means that football once again has become a real sport. I also thank the great reporter Gian Paolo Ormezzano. When I was a little girl, I practiced different sports, among them football and I used to read his articles. It was this genuine and loyal man along with my father who developed my sporting spirit. Many years ago, my father said that sport had transformed into a farce. At this moment I didn’t understand him, now I do, thank you loved and unforgettable father, you are always with me.
I am also expressing my thanks to another marvellous person, I defined him as a beautiful soul with its very own glow, he’s my lighthouse: Ayrton Senna. I feel him always close to me. When I have to face the arrogance “of the worst leaders” of certain football clubs, I am no longer alone, two marvellous angels will always accompany me. Maybe the rough football men will have a laugh when they read these words…. I invite them not to be afraid, to express their emotions; don’t always wear the winners mask! I have great respect for the race driver Mika Hakkinen, but I appreciated him even more when I found out that while trying to hide behind a bush in Monza, crying, continued to shed his tears when he discovered that he was being filmed … that’s the strength of being oneself!

Giuseppe Papadopulo Opinion about Ayrton SENNA by Giuseppe PAPADOPULO,
present coach of LECCE:

"Ayrton SENNA is not only a poet, he’s also a philosopher."

Silvio Baldini Opinion about Ayrton SENNA by Silvio BALDINI,
present trainer of CATANIA:

“I admired Ayrton Senna a lot; he was a great racing driver and a man. I give the example of his tenacity and willpower even towards the players whom he trained. I have a video about Ayrton, which I show to the boys. Ayrton had a broken shoulder. He was heard complaining, seen to be suffering terribly, in spite of these, he managed to successfully finish his career".
