What is a WPS file?

WPS files mostly belong to Writer by Kingsoft. A WPS file is a text document created by the Writer component of WPS Office (previously Kingsoft Office) productivity software suite. Information stored in a WPS file includes text, graphics, and layout information which make up a document. Another type of WPS file contains a theme used by the Rockbox replacement firmware of portable music players.

How to open a WPS file

You need a suitable software like Writer to open a WPS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your WPS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a WPS file directly in the browser:. To find out what program is needed to open WPS files, you need to determine the file format. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. The WPS file extension is quite common and is primarily used by a single program. But the following two file formats are common:

95% of all WPS files are based on the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also known by the name OLE2 Compound Document Format or Composite Document File Format. Compound document files are used to structure the contents of a document in the file. It is possible to divide the data into several streams, and to store these streams in different places in the file. In this way compound document files support a complete file system inside the file, the streams are like files in a real file system, and the sections are like subdirectories. Compound files always start with the bytes ÐÏà¡±á (hex code D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1). The app name of a WPS file is Microsoft Office Word or WPS Office_10.2.0.7636_F1E327BC-269C-435d-A152-05C5408002CA. There is also a globally unique identifier 0ea45ab2-9e0a-11d1-a407-00c04fb932ba or 28cddbc2-0ae2-11ce-a29a-00aa004a1a72. The internal containers are called CompObj, CONTENTS and SPELLING. WPS files are between 8 KB and 65 KB in size. The file type was used 20 years ago but is still in use today. Files like these are sometimes connected to bill, letter, address, christmas, carthew, list, love and revelation.
3% of all WPS files are Microsoft Works for DOS document files. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. WPS files can be up to 17 KB in size, but are often around 1 KB - 13 KB.
