WINTREK is now Freeware!

WINTREK was written in 1989 when Windows 3.1 was first released. It was probably the first shareware game to take advantage of the new MMSYSTEM DLLs, which provided audio and video hooks into Windows. Before this, Windows did not support any audio or color graphics display. At the time, the Windows API was poorly documented by Microsoft, which made writing this game a challenge. By today's standards, WINTREK is primitive in terms of graphics and special effects, but it is still a fun game to play.

WINTREK was actually based on Star Trek Classic, a shareware game I created in the mid 1980's for the now defunct Apple IIGS. That version was based on Mainframe StarTrek, which I first saw running on a DEC PDP-11 in the late 1970's. As there were no graphic capabilities or color monitors, the game was completely text based. Rumor has it that it originated in Armonk, NY at IBM, written for the 370 mainframe, about the time that the original Star Trek television series was in prime time.

Anyway, I decided to make WINTREK free. You don't need to send me money, and ignore the shareware references in the game. Below you can download the fully registered version and the documentation free of charge. Enjoy!
