Mike Shinoda - from Linkin Park
January 28 2010
Mike Shinoda is a musician, record producer, and artist from Agoura Hills, California. He is best known as the rapper, songwriter, keyboardist, vocalist and rhythm guitarist of rock band Linkin Park, and as a solo rapper in his side-project, Fort Minor. Linkin Park was formed in 1996 and achieved mainstream success in 2000 with its debut album, Hybrid Theory. The band has sold over 50 million albums worldwide and won two Grammy Awards. Mike Shinoda also provides artwork, production and mixing for both groups. A week after tragedy hit Haiti in the form of a massive earthquake, Linkin Park stepped forward to help the country's struggling residents with Download to Donate for Haiti, an ambitious project featuring new music from some of the industry's top musicians.

Glorious Excess (DIES) Raffle: Update

Remember the raffle from last year? If you don't, read this.

How many people got an email that they won? (other than the grand prize winner) There was a thread on the LPU asking for any winners to stand up, it was odd that no one said they won or mentioned it! Well, YOU might of won, that is if you entered the raffle! I didn't get any email from Celebrities for Charities Foundation, no notice at all and I thought I didn't get anything. Today I came home and I saw this UPS Express tube at my door, I was confused...I didn't order anything nor did my parents, not anything that would pertain in a tube, anyway. So I brought it inside and checked who it was from and guess what? It was from the foundation! As soon as I found out what it was I literally freaked. This surprise was awesome, especially one as grand as this! So all you people who lost hope, just wait! You might be a winner!

Best of luck to all of you!

Update: 8 Bit Rebellion On the Way

Mike posted a new blog post about the game!

A quick “8 BIT REBELLION” update. Our new game, available for the iPhone and iPod touch, will be out soon. We’ve pushed the release back a few weeks because we’re testing the game. In fact, I’m playing the game right now, making sure everything looks good. So far, there are still some minor changes to make...and I’m taking notes. We don’t want to release it until all we’ve addressed as many issues as we can!

Also, many of you have asked about the game being available for other platforms, since you don’t all have iPods (although Steve Jobs is hoping you will reconsider, ha). We’re hoping to get it out for other mobile platforms after it debuts with Apple. No word on that yet; it may take a while. For now, it will only be available on iPod and iPod touch.

Lastly, let there be no confusion: the song we released for DOWNLOAD TO DONATE is not the same song as the one on the game. The song on the game is ANOTHER brand new Linkin Park song.

For more info on 8 BIT REBELLION, go here:

Thanks,
mike

THAT is great news! Can't wait for it to be out! I'm jealous that Mike is already playing with it!

Mike D2D Haiti PopEater Interview

Friday, January 22, 2010

Found another interview with Mike about Download to Donate, anyone who hasnt already please download the album, add the widget to your own pages or pass it around, and please please donate.

Grammy-winning band Linkin Park is joining the ranks of celebrities on a mission to support relief efforts in Haiti; they've released a charity album thrown together with lightning speed. We spoke to Linkin Park member Mike Shinoda about Download to Donate, a compilation of unreleased songs from artists like Peter Gabriel, Alanis Morissette and the Dave Matthews Band. Shinoda tells PopEater exclusively, "I saw the images on the news, and I knew that Music for Relief had to do something. Our organization was started for the purpose of providing relief to people who had been hit by natural disaster. We started it after the tsunami in South Asia in 2005, and when we heard about the earthquake in Haiti, it was obvious to my band mates and me that we had a responsibility to do something."

Linkin Park - and their charity organization Music For Relief - channeled their energy into creating a widget with free, downloadable music. "We put it in yours hands to donate," Shinoda says. "You can donate a dollar, you can donate a thousand dollars, you can donate a hundred thousand dollars." Check out the widget below and the rest of our interview after the jump.

Linkin Park's own contribution to the project is a song called 'Not Alone,' a track they created from start to finish in less than two days. "I wish I could say we did the entire thing, from start to finished mix, in 24 hours. But that'd be fibbing," Shinoda says. "We actually had the bed of music and the melody in place. Once we picked the song, the lyrics came easily. It was a rough demo that was unfinished, and we finished it - the guys all said that it felt almost like fate that the song had never been finished. Once we decided that we were going to do this Donate to Download project and we needed to contribute a new song, Chester [Bennington] and I started working on lyrics. The lyrics just flowed out and they came really easily. We shot emails back and forth - 'hey, what do you think about this line? what do you think about that line?' - and within a day, we had the lyrics to the song."

Shinoda believes technology will help organizations like his accomplish things that the 'We Are the World's of yesterday couldn't achieve. "This project, I feel like it's a game-changing moment in terms of music charity, made possible by the technology of today," he explains. "Only a few years ago, you wouldn't have been able to get a song done as quickly as these songs can be done now. Only a few years ago, you wouldn't have been able to spread the word about a widget like this, because you wouldn't have had Facebook and Twitter - you wouldn't even have had widgets. The point is that right now, we're able to do this for the first time in history, and we really hope that we can get it right, and raise a lot of money and awareness for the people in Haiti who need it."

"We intend to do multiple releases of music; in fact a new song by Lupe Fiasco that I produced [just went up]. We're adding more songs as we go ... artists are hearing about it and they're calling our management company and saying 'Can I participate, can I donate a song?' And the answer is yes."

Shinoda is counting on Linkin Park fans to do the right thing with the free tunes. "You can go at any time and donate," he says. "If you feel like you've donated enough, then just download the songs. If you feel like you didn't donate anything and you listen to the songs and feel guilty - come back and donate!"

He adds, "The money's going to some great organizations. 100% of the money goes directly to the efforts in Haiti. We're working with the UN Foundation, Habitat For Humanity and Dave Matthews Band's Bama Works' Haitian Relief Effort. In broad strokes, the goal for Music For Relief is to provide immediate and long-term recovery, with focuses on clean water and shelter."

Mike on the New Album

Thursday, January 21, 2010

While Mike was at MTV talking about Donate to Download Haiti he also talked about the new Linkin Park album:

Linkin Park 'Challenge' Themselves On New Album
'Nobody else is making a record that sounds like this,' Mike Shinoda says.

Forget all the talk of "concept records" and "grandiose insanity." On their new album, Linkin Park are going back to their roots in order to make the most challenging record of their career.

On Tuesday, MTV News spoke to LP co-frontman Mike Shinoda about his band's just-launched Download to Donate for Haiti project and, in the process, we managed to get some new information about the band's much-anticipated follow-up to 2007's Minutes to Midnight, which has been in the works for more than a year now. And while he still maintains that LP will be doing their fair share of growing on the new record, it's important to know that they're also not ignoring their past — quite the opposite, in fact.

"The album is going really well — we decided to go with Rick Rubin again, he's been in the studio with us. And we've been working in a different studio than we did the last record in, we decided to go back to the studio we did Hybrid Theory and Meteora in," Shinoda said. "It's been going great, I feel like it's an entirely different process and an entirely different style of music than anything we've done before. It's hard to place. People keep asking me, 'What does it sound like?' and it's hard to describe. When people hear it, they're going to have a tough time saying that it falls into a category."

And while talk like that might freak out some of the band's core audience, Shinoda cautions that it's just part of the natural growth of the band. After all, they've been doing this for more than 13 years now.

"I'll say this: I think on the last record there was a lot of personal growth that happened. We individually broke down a lot of boundaries — creatively and personally — with each other. We were friends making an album together — it wasn't painful and heart-wrenching the way some of the other records were," he said. "We had a really good time making Minutes to Midnight, and now I feel like we've grown from that point, where we've kind of knocked down the boundaries to a place where we're making an album that has a sound, that has a consistent thread running through it, and we're making something with this open-minded creativity that feels good."

But the still-untitled album (which Bennington told MTV News late last year could be out in June) isn't going to be some hazy, lazy conceptual thing, some by-product of a bunch of well-heeled musicians' studio wonkery — far from it. Even though they're one of the hugest rock bands on the planet, Linkin Park still feel like they've got something to prove, even if it's only to themselves.

"We make records as a challenge to ourselves," Shinoda smiled. "And the challenge this time is: 'Nobody else is making a record that sounds like this, only we can do it.' "

As far as the actual video that aired on Larry King Live, I don't have, but we'll get it shortly!

EDIT: You can also now download/stream "Heroes" by Peter Gabriel on MusicForRelief.org, this was featured on Larry King Live after Mike and Enrique. :)

EDIT2: lpassociation.com uploaded the actual video on Larry King Live! Hopefully a better one will arise but for now this will suffice, go and watch it:

EDIT 4: Found a much better video thanks to sun5468 for uploading it.

EDIT3: Mike added to his blog post:
The piece came out great. Two notes:

1.) Although I was joking around about Enrique being late, we actually weren’t waiting around very long. Blame the satellite :)

2.) Although I was told Christine Emerson Reed was an actress…now I’m not so sure. I think she was a Santa Monica City councilwoman. Here’s our park:

"Not Alone" Lyrics / Happy Birthday Rob!

Mike posted the lyrics of Not Alone from the Download to Donate to Haiti, read here:

I break down / fear is sinking in
The cold comes / racing through my skin
Searching for / a way to get to you
through the storm

you
go / giving up your home
go / leaving all you’ve known
You are not alone

With arms up / stretched into the sky
With eyes like / echoes in the night
Hiding from / the hell that you’ve been through
Silent one

you
go / giving up your home
go / leaving all you’ve known
you
go / giving up your home
go / leaving all you’ve known
You are not alone

you
go / giving up your home
go / leaving all you’ve known
you
go / giving up your home
go / you are not unknown
You are not alone
You are not unknown
You are not alone

He also posted lots of links from the Download to Donate to Haiti Press. Check it out here.

On another note: Today is Rob's birthday! I hope most of you saw the tweet. :)
On behalf of the Mike Shinoda Clan, I would like to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY ROB! I hope you have a great day!
Also please remember that Mike will be on Larry King Live tonight at 8pm CST/9PM EST.

One more thing, please help us make #HappyBDayRobBourdon and #MusicForRelief a trending topic on Twitter. We've been trying all day but if we get enough fans to unite, I know we can do it.

Mike Download To Donate MTV Interview

Tuesday, January 19, 2010

LOS ANGELES — Barely a week after tragedy hit Haiti in the form of a massive earthquake, Linkin Park have stepped forward to help the country's struggling residents with Download to Donate for Haiti, an ambitious project featuring new music from some of the industry's top musicians. On Tuesday (January 19), we caught up with Mike Shinoda, who is currently working overtime to turn his musical talents into much-needed relief.

"Download to Donate has come together very, very quickly," Shinoda explained of the project, featuring brand-new music that can now be downloaded in exchange for a donation to Haiti relief efforts. "It was an idea as of Thursday — and as of right now, we have nine songs up."

Shinoda plans to add more tracks in the upcoming days — each from a major act who donated their track in response to the January 12 earthquake. "We ask that you donate, but you don't have to — if all you can afford is to spread the word, embed the widget, share it on Facebook, Twitter, whatever, then that will be good enough," explained the rapper/songwriter/guitarist for Linkin Park, whose new track "Not Alone" is offered alongside contributions from Peter Gabriel, Alanis Morissette, Dave Matthews Band and more. "We're hoping to raise a lot of money for a lot of people who need it in Haiti.

"We had a demo [for 'Not Alone'] — the music was laid out, we had done the song a little while ago ... we just never used it because we never thought it was done," Shinoda remembered of the origins of their track. "[After the tragedy in Haiti], we listened to the demo again, essentially scrapped all the words, rewrote the words ... when you've got that idea and emotional charge in you and you put that in the lyrics, for me it does make better lyrics." Those lyrics include, "I break down/ Fear is sinking in/ The cold comes/ Racing through my skin/ Searching for a way to get to you/ Through the storm you go, giving up your home/ Go, leaving all you've known/ You are not alone."

"There's an authenticity and a passion that you can hear in Chester's voice on this track; we literally wrote [the new lyrics] via e-mail, before he had flown out from Arizona to L.A. [to record them]," Shinoda said.

Part of the remarkable speed behind their reaction to Haiti, Shinoda added, can be attributed to a philanthropic groundwork the band has had in place for a half-decade. "We started our organization, Music for Relief, back in 2005 after the tsunami in South Asia," he explained. "Music for Relief's goal is to provide relief, funds and awareness in the wake of natural disasters ... this is the first time that the technology has been available to do something like this; just a few years ago, it wouldn't be possible for artists to turn around songs so quickly, in a matter of days."

Shinoda hopes fans will keep their ears — and their hearts — open for more, as he plans to upload additional tracks in the days to come.

"By the way, I should say that Music for Relief [donates] 100 percent of the funds," he added. "We're just a conduit; everybody's working for free and everybody's working hard."

EDIT: Mike posted about it:

I will be on CNN’s “Larry King Live” TONIGHT, Tuesday, January 19 to talk about Music for Relief’s DOWNLOAD TO DONATE album and relief efforts in Haiti. Tune in to hear more about the project.

Download To Donate Haiti

From mikeshinoda.com
On January 12, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti.  Hundreds of thousands are feared dead, many of whom are children.  Millions more are in need of medical attention, shelter, clothes and food just to make it through the days ahead.  It will take years to rebuild homes and communities.  My Linkin Park bandmates and I are deeply saddened by the situation and–with the help of an amazing list of talented artists all working in partnership with Music for Relief–want to aid the Haitian people.

Music for Relief has brought together an incredible album of artists who have all generously donated original songs to support the Haiti relief effort.  Artists include:  ALANIS MORISSETTE, THE ALL-AMERICAN REJECTS, DAVE MATTHEWS BAND,  ENRIQUE IGLESIAS,  HOOBASTANK, KENNA, LINKIN PARK, LUPE FIASCO, PETER GABRIEL AND SLASH.

I was a part of three of the songs.  One is a BRAND NEW LINKIN PARK SONG called “Not Alone.”  The second is by LUPE FIASCO and KENNA called “Resurrection.”  The third is a track that KENNA and I did a while back but was never released, called “Never Let Me Down.”

Now, we need your help: you can join in support of the immediate relief and long-term recovery process in Haiti by downloading songs at WWW.MUSICFORRELIEF.ORG and making a donation in any amount. And don’t forget to EMBED THE WIDGET on your Facebook or MySpace page, your blog, or your website…wherever you can spread the word.  Every little bit helps.

VISIT WWW.MUSICFORRELIEF.ORG TO DOWNLOAD TO DONATE

Funds raised through the program will support the United Nation’s rapid disaster response efforts through the UN Foundation, long-term rebuilding of sustainable homes with Habitat for Humanity, and Dave Matthew’s Band’s BAMA Works Haitian Relief effort.  100% of funds received will go directly to the Haiti efforts.

DOWNLOAD. LISTEN. DONATE. SPREAD THE WORD. BRING HOPE.

Kudos to all the artists who have donated their music for the appeal.

To everyone who downloads the tracks PLEASE make a donation, even if its a small one, every dollar/pound counts.

Go to MFR Homepage to donate.

Edit: Please tell all the people you can! Spread the word on Twitter by Retweeting Mike's tweet. Also please tell all the people you follow (with a lot of followers, like celebrities, musicians, artists, etc.) to spread the word! Here's the link: http://t.opsp.in/DAfJ

Edit: Can y'all comment on his blog? I can't comment! Oh and I found out that the mobile version isn't available for all mobile phones. Sorry guys. :/

Btw, Mike posted about his new layout:

Hey guys…It’s been a bit overdue, but the new redesign is finally here (as you can see). The art, videos, and other sections are being imported as we speak; you’ll see those again in the next few days. It may not look a lot different right now, but we’ll be streamlining the features as we go. I hope you like it.

On another note, my bandmates and I have a big announcement (not album related) coming today / tomorrow. Stay tuned.

EDIT: If you encounter any problems with the site, please leave a comment about it under this post. Thanks!

Mike on Cypress Hill's Album

Friday, January 15, 2010

Cypress Hill will release his first album since 2004 Rise Up on April 6th.
The first single from this album, Rise Up featured Tom Morello (from Rage Against the Machine) and he will be featured in another song in the album, Shut 'Em Down. Other rumored artists to be on this album are Slash and Mike, however a Billboard article (from last year) says "...writing and production collaborations with Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello on a track called "Rise Up" and with Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda on another song."

Linkin Park Game Update

Thursday, January 7, 2010

As we all knew the Linkin Park game was gonna come out this month. Can't wait! I'll be buying it for sure. Mike hasn't said the release date yet...but he did post this:

Many years ago, the world existed in 8-bit harmony...until PixxelKorp arrived. Now, underground forces are assembling to undo the evil corporation's mass-brainwashing campaign. You may be our only hope to lead the rebellion to victory!

The new Linkin Park game is on the way. I just got a new test-build of the game, and it's looking great. As you would expect, my bandmates and I worked hand-in-hand with the design team to create the look and content of the game. For fans of my art: you'll see some new and familiar characters come to life in this 8-bit-meets-hi-res virtual world.

In the game, you have been chosen by the rebellion to solve a mystery. Items have been stolen from the six leaders of the rebellion. Collecting these items is the rebellion's only hope to thwarting the plans of the evil PixxelKorp.

I can't give away too many details about the game just yet...but I can tell you this: for all the Linkin Park fans excited to hear new music, I have some big news for you: if you finish this game, you get more than just a credit screen.

You get a brand new Linkin Park song.

The game will be available on the iPhone and iPod touch this month. More to come...

Can't wait!

Video and Picture Update

From mikeshinoda.com:

New in the VIDEOS section. Looks like Brad has relinquished all "instrument duties" in favor of a much more exciting responsibility in our band: ProTools editor.

PS, did you guys see this photo from the Chi Cheng / Deftones benefit show? Just added:

Video isn't playing for me...probably for a lot of y'all if not all... :/
but that's a great picture!

Mike Gives into Twitter

He tweeted this:

At last! REAL tweets, it's amazing before he was against twitter and now... he has it Twitter bookmarked, downloaded Tweetie for the iPhone, and he's tweeting!

Expect real tweets from Mr. Shinoda!

Plus @robdyrdek said this:

I am just so proud right now..God Bless modern technology and all of it's styles..Blog it,tweet it,text it..

I'm not sure if Phoenix won though, he did say 3 months but can't remember if he tweeted daily.

Edit: Mike also changed his Twitter Background:

I also think he changed the colors on his sidebar (for Twitter) but I'm not 100% sure on that.
