Willys Whippet Engine and Transmission

WoodWorking

Engine has been sold, however I will leave the pictures for reference

From what I can see the engine has seen some moisture or outright water coming in from the exhaust, this is consistant with the up-turned exhaust elbow, I suspect the engine was used to run a sawmill which was located on the property where it was found. The engine seems like a good candidate for a rebuild, no obvious signs that it has been bored, no obvious cracks. The only real damage seems to be from rust in cylinder one, the exhaust valve there is stuck due to rust. I suppose it will free up with some oil & care. With #1 cyland the tappets removed so #1 exhaust valve isn't being forced open, the engine turns smoothly, (after being cleaned up a bit cyl#1 seems to move fine in its bore, but it will need to be honed or, bored before being put into service).

Cylinder 1: water damage apparently due to open exhaust valve and water entering the exhaust pipe.

After about a week of soaking in penetrating oil, I removed the connecting rod from the crank, rotated the crank away, then taped the cyl with a wood block. It moved pretty easy, I then used an old Lisle ridge reamer to scrape away the crust created by rust. with a slight overbore or maybe just honing I think the cyl will be fine. right now the cyl moves through it's bore easily

Cylinder 2: all seems well here Cylinder 3: Cylinder 4: excuse the rusty oil, I stuffed the rag that I wiped up #1 with in there for a second while I was working
