An interview with handbag extraordinaires Arnoldo & Battois

We’re currently crushing on the Arnoldo][Battois spring/summer 2012 handbag collection and we just can’t wait for it to come to the US! Lucky for us, we got to interview the brand’s designing duo while we wait.

Silvano Arnoldo and Massimiliano Battois

These two designers take their time when it comes to creating the perfect handbag, but how long will it take for them to make their way to the US? Their new spring/summer 2012 collection is inspired by the dullness, and intensity, of the polaroid picture. Filled with muted mints, pale corals and faded golds, this handbag collection is definitey worth a thousand words.

SK: When did you realize you wanted to become accessory designers?

A&B: We worked for a long time with Roberta di Camerino and we discovered a new passion: the handbag design.

SK: How long does it usually take to construct a piece?

A&B: The “Elefante” bag, a symbol of the brand and our bestseller, is entirely handmade, stitched as a haute couture dress and enriched by two brass elephant heads that are the attachment for the handle. We need 10 – 15 days to construct it.

SK: Where can readers buy your handbags in the U.S.?

A&B: We don’t have any shops in the United States because we have only started to distribute the collection around the world, but we will arrive soon.

SK:  What is the price range?

A&B: 500  – 1500 euros ($650 – $1,300 US dollars)

SK:  What matters to you most as a fashion designer?

A&B: We think a lot about the woman for whom we design our bags: She is an unconventional person, she does not follow “fashion” in order to feel adequate, she has a strong personality, is able to choose for herself and discover new worlds.

SK:  Where do you get your inspiration?

A&B: The elements of the natural world and architecture constantly influence the collections — shapes, colors and textures. The link to Venice is the source of fascination for new details such as lizards, crabs and brass elephants from old Venetian doors with special or unusual closures that provide inspiration for handles and details.

SK:  What inspired the colors for the S/S 2012 collection?

A&B: The S/S 2012 collection is inspired by the world of Polaroid and faded pictures. Shades of green between milk mint and sage with intense peaks reaching the merger with turquoise, white mixed to gray and sand, pale coral tainted with beige, pinkish cognac, faded purple and laminated bronze chameleon reflecting related colors. Furthermore, the gold plating fades as it is affected by time, turning into platinum.

SK: How many seasons in advance do you start designing?

A&B: Three or four. We experiment a lot so we need more time.

Judging from the look of the Arnoldo][Battois spring/summer 2012 handbag collection, the experimentation strategy proves very successful! For more information about Arnoldo][Battois, visit their .
