On June 4, 1947, at the age of seven, Angela Volpini was sitting on the ground making bouquets while herding cattle in a remote wooded location, when she felt someone lift her up from behind. She turned around to see a sweetly beautiful stranger, who said, "I have come to teach you the way of happiness on earth." Angela identified the visitor as the Madonna, and saw her again, at the same spot, on the fourth of each month until June 4, 1956. In 1957, the bishop authorized a church at the apparition site of Il Bocco, designed with space for communal activities. Above the altar is a painting of the Madonna as Angela saw her, in a white veil, blue mantle, and pink robe, with a rosary over her right arm, her hands gesturing delicately, as if in communication. From the Madonna's inspiring messages, the seer envisioned a world where people could live together in love and joy. To this end she founded the New Cana Center in 1958.
