  • NEW Weekend Black Type Schedule

    Friday, 10th May 2024
The last of the big four autumn Group 1s at Morphettville this weekend is a sign that the seasonal shift towards Queensland's exciting rich winter carnival is not far away. That's made doubly clear by the absence of any Black Type racing in Victoria on Saturday, a situation amplified by no Sydney stakes races either, albeit provincial track Gosford has two Listed races carded. Even with six Black Type features in Queensland – they are all at the Sunshine Coast – it's an ultra rare Australian Saturday that sees not a single stakes race in Perth, Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane. Whilst every effort is made to ensure race times (in AET) are accurate, please consult official race cards if certainty is required.

  • NEW $3.4m She’s Extreme Tops 2024 Chairman’s Sale

    Friday, 10th May 2024
Outstanding filly She’s Extreme became the equal second-most expensive horse ever sold at an Inglis Chairman’s Sale when realising $3.4m to the bid of Coolmore at Riverside on Thursday evening, reports inglis.com.au. The Newgate Consignment-offered mare was one of nine to realise $1m or more on the night as the Riverside auditorium was witness to some gladiatorial bidding duels right up until the very last lot. She’s Extreme (Extreme Choice-Keysbrook, by So Secret) had long been billed as the potential sale topper but the final price shocked even the mare’s connections. “That was an extraordinary result for a beautiful and extraordinary animal…we’re very happy. It’s a great night that Inglis has put on for the industry and it’s great to see a horse sold that way and make her money. It rarely works out anything like this,’’ part owner Rob Crabtree said. Coolmore’s Tom Moore said She’s Extreme would likely be served by either Shinzo, Wootton Bassett or Home Affairs. “She’s Extreme is a very rare offering in that it’s not often a filly can win a Group 1 at two and train on and win an Oaks, it puts herself in very rare company… she had everything that we look for in these elite mares and the type of mares that we come to the Chairman’s Sale to buy."

  • NEW Record-Breaking Success at Inglis Chairman’s

    Friday, 10th May 2024
The 2024 renewal of Inglis’ evening extravaganza was considered an ‘electric night’ of Chairman’s action, with the sale having averaged a Southern Hemisphere mare’s sale record of $622,946, eclipsing last year’s record by 12%, reports inglis.com.au. She’s Extreme (see above item) topped the sale at $3.4m, just ahead of the last lot of the night Tutta La Vita (The Autumn Sun), which sold to American John Stewart of Resolute Racing for $3.2m. Stewart confirmed Tutta La Vita’s current trainer Chris Waller would continue to work with her and that she would be aimed at next month’s Gr1 Queensland Oaks. “It’s exciting, it’s something we were looking at and we think it’s a good partnership with Chris [Waller] who we met when we were in Australia for the Golden Slipper, so knowing he’s training the horse and how well he knows the horse was one of the reasons we decided to buy her,’’ Stewart said. Thursday night’s third-top lot was Kimochi (Brave Smash), offered by Twin Hills Stud on behalf of her owner Leo To and bought by Islay Vale for $2.2m. Mr To was unable to be at Riverside for the auction and got a little emotional after seeing the results. “I watched the Sale Day Live broadcast in my car, she’s just the most beautiful filly and deserved a price like that. She’s the best horse of my life and I’m very happy with the price, she deserved it and will be a great filly for her new owner now.” Nine mares realised seven figures – She’s Extreme ($3.4m), Tutta La Vita ($3.2m), Kimochi ($2.2m), C’est Magique ($1.7m), Pennyweka ($1.6m), Autumn Ballet ($1.6m), Pinocchio ($1.15m), Startantes ($1.15m) and Banana Queen ($1m). Newgate Consignment was again leading vendor, selling 16 of their offerings for an aggregate of $11,795,000.
  • Pike’s Chance for Morphettville Redemption

    Friday, 10th May 2024
Meanwhile, champion jockey William Pike is determined to break his winless streak at Morphettville with Oscar’s Fortune (Rich Enuff) in Saturday’s The Goodwood, according to rwwa.com.au. Despite his impressive record elsewhere, Adelaide’s Morphettville racetrack has been a thorn in his side, and he’s eager to change what he says is about a 0-50 record there. Oscar’s Fortune, with his recent successes and promising form, presents an opportunity for Pike to conquer this challenge. His partnership with Oscar’s Fortune, especially after overcoming a broken foot earlier in the year, adds a layer of personal motivation to his quest for victory. Pike’s confidence in the horse’s abilities, particularly after their performance in The Quokka and Winterbottom Stakes, is evident. With Oscar’s Fortune showing consistency and maturity in his races, Pike believes the timing is right for a shot at Group 1 success. The rivalry between Western Australia’s Oscar’s Fortune and Amelia’s Jewel (Siyouni) adds further intrigue to the race, with both horses having crossed paths before. Despite being slightly behind in the betting odds, Dion Luciani-trained Oscar’s Fortune has already proven his ability to best Amelia’s Jewel in the Roma Cup (see below) and holds a weight advantage this time around. Oscar’s Fortune's remarkable journey, from being a $5,500 Inglis Digital Online bargain purchase to earning over a million dollars in prize money, adds a fairy tale element to his story. Having never finished out of the money the money, it’s a story with chapters that are yet to be written.

  • Quality Field for Final SA Group 1 of the Season

    Friday, 10th May 2024
As the final Group 1 contested during this year’s upgraded South Australian racing carnival – all four were elevated to $1 million purses – the Gr1 Goodwood Handicap has been won by some outstanding gallopers in the past, and even a few who didn’t manage to win, highlighted by record-breaking sire I Am Invincible (see above item) who finished a length second to the mighty Takeover Target in 2009. With last start Gr1 Robert Sangster runner-up Learning To Fly (Justify) already scratched, the field is down to 16 runners. Star Western Australian mare Amelia’s Jewel (Siyouni-Bumbasina, by Canford Cliffs) will be having her final start for current trainer Simon Miller before heading for a spell and resuming as part of the Annabel Neasham yard. Second last time out in the $5m Quokka, connections indicated post-race that she wasn’t a 1200m horse, and here we are over 1200m once again, but on form alone she can’t be discounted as the race favourite especially with a few noted speed performers set to see Saturday’s $1m sprint run at a solid tempo. Philip Stokes’ hitherto underrated Climbing Star (Zoustar-Bryony, by Fastnet Rock) comes into the race having won the Gr1 Robert Sangster last start after jumping from a wide barrier, and here against the boys she will be in a very similar position, carrying the same weight and allocated barrier 13, one gate closer than the 14 she jumped from last start. Third in the same race after working home very well is what many consider an elite winner in waiting with Jason Warren’s Benedetta (Hellbent-Whatalovelyday, by Domesday) dropping a kilo and a half from her last run. Aided by the in-form Jamie Kah taking the ride, the Mill Park-bred and sold mare could be the one swamping the leaders late.
  • Champion Ripole Mating a Potential Nest Egg

    Friday, 10th May 2024
Originally destined for a triumphant return to racing, renowned 3YO filly Nest (Curlin-Marion Ravenwood, by A.P. Indy), crowned USA age group champion in 2022, has gracefully bowed out from the track, reports bloodhorse.com. Following the announcement of her pending retirement by owner Mike Repole, plans are in play for her to be paired with Coolmore stallion Uncle Mo at Ashford Stud. The decision came subsequent to a series of undisclosed training sessions at Stonestreet Farm's facilities in Florida. However, a routine diagnostic examination unveiled a minor anomaly in her hind ankle, prompting her retirement, as reported by Daily Racing Form. Nest has now found her way to Lane's End Farm in Kentucky, where she will soon be united with Uncle Mo (Indian Charlie) whose track career included elite 2YO wins in the Gr1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile and Gr1 Champagne Stakes. Her retirement marks the convergence of two esteemed champions from Repole Stable, with plenty of anticipation of what their mating could potentially produce. Nest boasts an impressive record, clinching victory in three Grade 1 races, though her unforgettable moment came in a valiant second-place finish at the Belmont Stakes in 2022, where she narrowly missed the top spot to stablemate Mo Donegal. Throughout her career, Nest amassed earnings exceeding $2 million and captured the hearts of racing enthusiasts with her unwavering determination. Despite a somewhat subdued performance in her later years, her owner remained optimistic about her potential for a resurgence, but perhaps an early retirement may turn out to be a silver lining in due course.

  • Pedigree On Gluyas' Side in Fillies' Classic

    Friday, 10th May 2024
A winner of her last two starts highlighted by her seven-length romp over 2050m at Strathalbyn, the Andrew Gluyas trained Gotta Go Guru (Fiorente- Gossip Guru, by Reset) should appreciate the step up to the 2500m of Saturday's Gr3 Fillies Classic at Morphettville. With her sire winning over 3200m in the Melbourne Cup and her dam winning over 3600m, the Harry Perks-bred filly is from the family of Champion 3YO Gold Guru, Gamblin' Guru and Gallant Guru, all stakes winners over 2000m plus. With Perks' runners Air Assault (Justify) and Seeking Stardom (Tosen Stardom) finishing third in last Saturday's Gr1 South Australian Derby and Listed Adelaide Guineas respectively, the home-town hero is due to collect a stakes victory during the carnival. Second in the Gr1 New Zealand Oaks two starts back before finishing just under four lengths off the winner of the Gr1 South Australian Oaks last start, the step back up in trip is going to suit Andrew Forsman's Positivity (Almanzor-Pussy O'Reilly, by O'Reilly). From barrier three, the Damian Lane-ridden Woburn Farm graduate should be able to settle handier than last start and be ready to pounce when it matters. With Arrowfield Stud's The Autumn Sun siring three Group 1 winners in as many weeks, the G Waterhouse & A Bott-trained Harvest Moon (The Autumn Sun-Pinot, by Pierro) could be the fourth. The second foal of the Gr1 VRC Oaks winner Pinot, Harvest Moon was only just two lengths off the winner in the Gr3 Chairman's Stakes (2000m), with two of those ahead of her finishing second and third in the Gr1 South Australian Derby last Saturday.
  • Super Seth to Stand for $45k + GST in 2024

    Friday, 10th May 2024
Emerging Waikato Stud stallion Super Seth (Dundeel-Salutations, by Redoute's Choice) has enjoyed an outstanding first crop of runners this season, reports racingnews.co.nz. The Group 1-winning son of leading Arrowfield Stud stallion Dundeel was an exceptional racehorse, winning his first two juvenile starts before dazzling in the Gr1 Caulfield Guineas as a 3YO  against a stellar field that included the then previously unbeaten Alligator Blood (All Too Hard). With pedigree and looks to match his outstanding race record, Super Seth's highly anticipated first runners have included Group 3 winner and Gr1 Champagne Stakes runner up Linebacker, as well as the Group 2-placed Poetic Champion. Of his exciting first-season sire, Waikato Stud principal Mark Chittick explains, "He's the type of horse that really suits the tough, high level Australasian racing… He was an expensive stallion purchase but he was exactly the type of horse we wanted and at this early stage his progeny are proving that they are following in his footsteps. They are good horses. That's exactly what we are trying to achieve with a horse like Super Seth at Waikato Stud." Results on the racetrack have been supported by results in the sales ring for Super Seth's offspring. Across yearling and 2YO sales, his progeny have sold for up to $700,000 "There has been lots of speculation as to what his service fee would go to and we know we potentially could have significantly increased it but we're playing the long game in our ownership of stallions. For us it's not just about the first the first season on the racetrack, it's about the next 15 or 20 years for Waikato Stud, the Super Seth Syndicate and breeders." He will stand this season at $45,000 +GST (LFG).

  • Unbeaten Cool Duke Ready for Gosford Highway

    Friday, 10th May 2024
A change of environment for Cool Duke (Frosted-Empress Eleven, by War Pass) was needed according to trainer Wayne Wilkes and now the 4YO gelding is unbeaten in three starts, reports racingnsw.com.au. "The horse just refused to load, they got him to the races a couple of times, but he wanted no part of the barriers, but he came up here in really good order," Wayne said about Cool Duke's previous trainer Con Karakatsanis. "We just took him quietly and kept persevering with the issue and his trackwork was exceptional. Eventually he settled in, appreciated the different environment, I think." Wilkes enthused, "He always showed way above average ability in trackwork and trials. Finally [he] took it to the races and has just answered every question put to him - yep, he's exciting. And while he's only ever raced on heavy tracks there's no reason to think he won't be just as effective on firm. But the way the weather is, it's wait and see for everyone. But Saturday, good draw, nice weight, he'll be on pace and we know he'll relish the conditions if others don't get through it." Cool Duke has been ridden in all his three wins by Wilkes' daughter Shae but she will be replaced by in-form apprentice Dylan Gibbons for Saturday's run at Gosford. "No just her first season, this gelding was Shae's first race ride just in March, way too early to ride against all those experienced seniors in a big field. Shae's a fast learner, worked hard to get her weight right and making really good progress; her turn will come."
  • Neasham Saddles Four in Hollindale Chase

    Friday, 10th May 2024
With Saturday's Hollindale Stakes meeting moved to the Sunshine Coast after the revamped Gold Coast track was deemed unsuitable for racing just yet, trainer Annabel Neasham will be without war horse Zaaki (Leroidesanimaux) who has won the past three editions of the race. In his place, she will saddle up four of the 14 strong field headed by Numerian (Holy Roman Emperor-Delicate Charm, by High Chaparral) who resumes here off the back of a successful, Group 2-winning campaign in Perth. With many of the field being aimed at races further down the track during the Brisbane Winter Carnival, Neasham will also saddle up the last start Listed quinella of Mighty Ulysses (Ulysses-Token Of Love, by Cape Cross) and Jimi Hendrix (New Bay-Planchart, by Gio Ponti), both imported runners looking to continue the outstanding run of European runners for their trainer. With a solid Queensland record highlighted by the back-to-back wins in the Gr1 Doomben Cup off back-to-back second placed efforts in this race behind Zaki, the P & P Snowden-managed Huetor (Archipenko-Briviesca, by Peintre Celebre) comes into the race off an impressive win in the Gr3 JRA Plate and is likely to start favourite. Set to ensure a solid tempo with her catch me if you can tactics, the Michael Kent-trained Deny Knowledge (Pride Of Dubai-The Paris Shrug, by Manduro) is likely to be having one of her final starts as she has been entered as Lot 444 at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale where she is part of the Newgate Farm draft.

  • Grey River Closing in On a Proud Moment

    Friday, 10th May 2024
Fourth at her last two starts, both at black type level behind Climbing Star (Zoustar) and Extremely Lucky (Extreme Choice) who will both line up in the Gr1 Goodwood Handicap at the same meeting, the Jon O'Connor trained Grey River (Al Maher-Grey Cheval, by Husson Lightning) rarely runs a bad race and Saturday's Gr3 Proud Miss Stakes (1200m) looks a race she is capable of winning. Drawn in for the first time in a few starts, the 4YO Todd Pannell-ridden mare does rise in weight from her latest efforts, but she appears on the improve and should be in the finish. A narrow second last start in Perth, the Luke Ferrier trained Laced Up Heels (Toronado-A City Girl, by Exceed And Excel) has been in solid form this time in and has been installed the race favourite in the large field of 19 runners. Another mare coming into the race in fine form, and also by Swettenham Stud's leading sire is the Ciaron Maher-trained Extratwo (Toronado-Red Pixie, by Lonhro). A winner of three of her last four starts, the mare is yet to step up to black type racing this campaign, with the Proud Miss Stakes looking an ideal option for the Qatar Bloodstock and partners raced 4YO.
  • Vinnie Has Imposing Snitzel Record in His Sights

    Friday, 10th May 2024
It's a cliché that records are made to be broken. More often than not, they're not, with many standing the test of time. Albeit the Australian Black Type Premiership is still relatively embryonic, in just its second season, Arrowfield Stud's Snitzel set an extremely high benchmark when claiming the Premiership with 457 points over arch-rival I Am Invincible (253). Last season, the Yarraman Park Stud stalwart went one better when taking out the title with 377 points. Now, with a little less than 3-months of the season to run, but one that still includes a number of big-ticket races, I Am Invincible is in with a chance of eclipsing Snitzel's KPI. The son of Invincible Spirit has passed the first test – he has gone through the 400-point barrier and is currently sitting on 409 points. Like any notoriously different climb, the last 10 percent of scaling an Everest-like peak can prove to be 50 percent of the challenge. Contextually, in reaching his 457 points several seasons ago, through May, June and July of 2022, Snitzel's progeny added 52 points from 10 in-the-frame Black Type finishes. Needing another 49 to reach 458 seasonal points, I am Invincible is a nose ahead of the pace required. Amazingly, Snitzel's 457 points came from 77 stakes races, whilst Vinnie's current total has come from 67 to date. If one was viewing this using a squigly line graphic as displayed in a T20 cricket match run chase, then it's a neck and neck scenario where every point counts. I Am Invincible is represented by eight Group and Listed runners on Saturday, including two in the Gr1 Goodwood. Click on the image below where his blue highlighted runners are a gateway to each runner and live race field. You can also 'deep dive' into all of his stakes performers from the last four seasons.

  • Intriguing Gold Coast Guineas for Punters

    Friday, 10th May 2024
With ten of the 18 final acceptances for Saturday's Gold Coast Guineas at the Sunshine Coast coming into the race either first or second up from a spell, the large field could turn up an upset with many varying form lines leading into the race. One runner with race fitness on his side who is surely going to prove hard to beat is Godolphin's Corniche (Fastnet Rock-Montsegur, by New Approach). Finishing fourth, a length and a half from Gr1 winner Joliestar (Zoustar) last start in the Gr2 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint, the colt was coming off the back of two Listed placed efforts. Jockey James McDonald will be riding the colt for the first time on race day and if you need any convincing about the colt's ability, note that he did defeat eventual Gr1 Golden Slipper winner Shinzo by a length and a half in the Gr2 Skyline Stakes at 2. Having finished third in the very same race, one of the most intriguing runners in Saturday's contest is the G Waterhouse & A Bott entrant Bases Loaded (Deep Field-Passarelle, by Not A Single Doubt) who we have not seen on race day since he finished third in the Gr1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) over 12 months ago. With five runs under his belt, the China Horse Club, Newgate Farm and partners-raced colt won on debut before never finishing further back than fifth in four Group races. Last seen when a narrow second in the Gr1 Surround Stakes in March, Bjorn Baker's Stefi Magnetica (All Too Hard-Mid Summer Music, by Oamaru Force) may find the 1400m a little short, but she should carry some residual fitness, and no matter what she does in this race, she should be followed throughout the carnival.
  • Peters Investments Tip of WA Weanling Spear

    Friday, 10th May 2024
Bob and Liam Peters concluded a notable week with significant expenditure of $610,000 at the Inglis Australian Foal Sale last Monday. The duo, representing Peters Investments and Byerley Bloodstock respectively, actively participated in Day 1 trading at Riverside Stables, reports tbwa.net.au. Their acquisitions included a Toronado – Justice Glory colt (Lot 24) from Stonehouse Thoroughbreds for $260,000, followed by a So You Think – Majesty filly (Lot 70) from Fairhill Farm for $280,000, and a So You Think – Shojiki colt (Lot 194) from Sledmere Stud for $70,000. What the trio has in common is that they are all by sire-sons of High Chaparral. The Toronado colt, out of a Fastnet Rock full-sister to Peters Investments' Gr2 WA Derby winner Tuscan Queen, was originally acquired by Ryan Arnel of Stonehouse Thoroughbreds for $220,000 at the 2022 Chairman’s Sale. Arnel expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the sale, citing his admiration for Tuscan Queen as a driving factor behind his decision to breed the colt by Sweteenham Stud’s Toronado. Liam Peters acknowledged surpassing their anticipated bidding for the So You Think – Majesty filly but expressed contentment with securing her, noting her impressive qualities. Other notable transactions at the foal sale included purchases by WA visitors totaling $1.5 million, with acquisitions by Nino Tufilli and Wally Daly. Trainer Simon Miller was also prominent, with his purchases including a Pierro colt and a Nicconi filly, while Phil Ibbotson of Westbury Park invested in potential prospects for the Western Breeders Alliance draft at the 2025 Perth Magic Millions.

  • Waller Hoping to Tick Ken Russell Memorial Box

    Friday, 10th May 2024
Won in the past by a host of future Group 1 winners including Stronger, Sizzling, Hot Snitzel, Spirit Of Boom and Gold Edition, Saturday's running of the Gr3 Ken Russell Memorial Classic (1200m) should be monitored from a future standpoint. Not having won the race in the past, the closest trainer C J Waller has gone to winning in recent renewals was with Ranch Hand (Fastnet Rock) who finished a narrow second three years back sporting the Peachester Lodge silks, and this year the same coloured silks will be worn by Waller's leading contender Imperial Force (Snitzel-Ultimate Fever, by Gold Fever). Purchased from the draft of Lime Country Thoroughbreds for $1.6m at the Inglis Easter yearling sales, the Coolmore and partners-raced colt finished second on debut before putting it all together second time out and pulling clear by more than three and a half lengths to win. Given an easy time in a recent barrier trial to see him ticking along, Nash Rawiller will stick with the colt come Saturday where the pair will need to overcome a very, very wide draw. Another coming into the race off a last start win is the Ciaron Maher-handled Perspiration (Too Darn Hot-Latitude, by Casino Prince). Second in his first two starts, the $270,000 Magic Millions yearling sale purchase then went to Mornington where he toyed with his rivals to score as favourite by two and a half lengths. Rising considerably in class, the Toby Edmonds-trained Silva 'N' Suave (D'argento-My Word, by Viscount) holds nominations to future Brisbane winter carnival stakes races, suggesting that connections rate him highly. Winning by three lengths on debut over 1050m at the Gold Coast, the Bowness Stud yearling sale graduate will be ridden by Robbie Dolan on Saturday and will be aiming to become the second stakes performer from just six first crop runners for D'Argento (So You Think).

  • Treble For Airborne Cruz at Happy Valley

    Friday, 10th May 2024
Already relishing a rich vein of form where he recently celebrated 1,,500 winners, Hong Kong trainer Tony Cruz enjoyed a treble at Happy Valley on Wednesday night with Righteous Arion (Rich Enuff-Tranquil Harmony, by Dream Ahead), Lovero (Lord Kanaloa-Sacred Sight, by Fastnet Rock) and Atomic Beauty (Wootton Bassett-Loyale, by Turtle Bowl), reports scmp.com. "I'm very happy tonight," Cruz said. "All the jockeys rode a good race, especially Brenton Avdulla (on Atomic Beauty). I told him to have the horse handy and he went to the front and he still won from the front. I'm thrilled by it." With regards to Righteous Arion, he said, "Top ride from Hugh Bowman. Top weight, 135 [pounds] with gate 12, he rode a perfect race. I think the horse loves Happy Valley. I've been trying [him] at Sha Tin but the horse is just no good at Sha Tin. He seems to know this track here and loves this track." Lovero, meanwhile, took his record to four wins. "[Lovero] managed to hang on. Angus Chung is doing a good job. This lad is improving a lot and he's getting results," Cruz said. Now 67-years-old senior trainer Tony Cruz is just the third trainer to breach the 1,500 winners benchmark in competitive Hong Kong. By winners (43), he is currently ranked joint fourth for the 2024 season.
