About this Breed
This native of Malta harkens back to the hounds depicted in 4,000-year-old Egyptian artworks. The Pharaoh Hound is among the oldest breeds of dog on Earth. As such, they are uniquely suited to the climate and circumstance of their origin. Their coats are very thin and they have very little body padding, so they are often cold if you live in a temperate climate. A soft bed is certainly a must. As such, there is very little shedding. They also have very little dander generally, thought their skin can be very sensitive. The Pharaoh Hound is tall and sleek, with a thin head and pointed ears. The coat is reddish tan in color and blends in very well with arid landscapes. The tail is long, thin and slightly curved up at the bottom. A white tip on the tail is considered favorable in competition. Though the eyes are quite small, Pharaohs have very tall ears with a particularly keen sense of hearing. They are always very alert and your dog will bark at any noise he or she can hear, which would be all of them. They are unique among dogs in that they will actually blush, with their noses turning a rosy brown when excited or flushed. Pharaoh hounds are very friendly with other dogs and people. As such, they don't make very good guard dogs unless used solely as an alarm. They are natural runners and do best when allowed a daily run, while being careful they don't escape from an unmanned and insufficient fence.
