Peeps is working on those climbing skills. Good girl.

Sorry for all the trouble you are having with the internet gremlins today. Thank you for going to all the trouble of this treat for us. I love watching them figure stuff out 🥰.

Wonderful to see that all of the cubs are doing well. They are all improving their climbing skills🥰! Peeps is so cute together with her NAPB 💕🐻🧸💕

ABR Daily Update-April 18,2024-A Short Panic 😳🐻😱

Weather: 82°F (28°C) Humidity 48%, Sunny 🌞

Daisy Mae, Duke, and Jellybean Bear have moved outside!! Well, kind of. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 🤔

Curators have been working hard to deep clean the Acclimation Pen that connects Wild Enclosure 1 to the Hartley House. The pen was power washed and “cubbified” with new, cub-sized firehose bumpers fastened to the wooden platforms. Duke Bear was the first to approach the opened gate, followed by Jellybean. All three of the cubs have spent the majority of their day today exploring and enjoying their new outdoor-ish enclosure.

Access to the Acclimation Pen has also freed up more space for Casper and Shadow Bear in the Hartley House. The brothers now can shift freely between rooms 1 and 2, while the trio has free range of room 3 and the Acclimation Pen.

While all of the other ursine residents were moving around, Peeps took the liberty to move around herself. A short panic ensued when Curators could not spot Peeps Bear on the cameras. After countless sweeps with the PTZ camera, and just as Curator Katrina started the trek uphill to get eyes on her in-person, Peeps was finally found. 😮‍💨 Can you see her?

This time of year never fails to keep everyone on their toes. Thank you for your support in our mission to give cubs like them a second chance. ❤️

When I read “a short panic” my immediate thought was that Twinkle and Tinsel finally climbed that tree and making their escape. Then I remembered they were already released to the wild. I hope they are doing well.

Baby bears=grey hairs! 🐻+❤️=👵🏻Glad little Miss Peeps is ok!!

I love your posts and look forward to them every day. Glad Peeps was found and that they are all doing well.

How do you come up with names?

Will all six be in the same enclosure once they go out to outside

The name Peeps just fits her to a T.

Didn't see an FB live on the page. Did you record it? We LOVE these bears! Thank you for all you do for them.

We appreciate that everyone puts in long hours. The cubs would say Thank You as well, but we all know that doesn't come until they graduate and run free!

Oh, I see it now! So precious, thank you

April 16, 2024: Busy Day
The cubs and members of the ABR team were all busy today. The cubs were busy playing, eating, and finally sneaking a little snooze. The curators were exceptionally busy today. There was porridge to prepare and deliver, rooms to scrub, notes to enter, and cubby pools and Acclimation Pens to power wash.

We also had several engagements away from the bear facility today. Many of you have met JoAnne at our Visitor Center. In her spare time, JoAnne is a member of the Townsend Garden Club. Today, she engaged our team to speak to the Club about gardening with bears in mind. Tonight, we are speaking about ABR and Hiking in Bear Country at Little River Trading Company.

Our ABR Board Members, Volunteers, and JoAnne had a delicious assignment today! Ben & Jerry's welcomed ABR to participate with them at Free Cone Day. It's always a fun day, and we get to share the mission of ABR with so many new folks. Many thanks to the great staff at Ben & Jerry's! They work very hard all day to help raise funds and awareness for our cubs.

My husband and I enjoyed the presentation about ABR & Hiking at Little River Trading Company last night. It was great to meet two of the curators, and it was very informative!

Thank you for all you do! My husband and I met JoAnne on 2 visits last November and she is an absolute doll.We were on our way home and decided to stop and adopt another cub, about ten minutes until opening and she allowed us into the visitors center and was so patient with us old people. She was so knowledgable about the bears, we will more than likely stop again this year to donate, mostly because of such kindness.

Excellent update!! Thanks for your hard work!!!

ABR Daily Update-April 15, 2024-Getting on with it. 🐻

Weather: 80F (27C) Humidity 46%, Sunny 🌞

It’s a hot one! Our cubs don’t care; they’re in climate-controlled buildings practicing being bears. Everything they need to know is preprogrammed, so all we do is give them food, shelter, time… and air-conditioning. Otherwise, we stay out of their way and let them get on with it.

Casper and Shadow are instructing us on the latest moves in Cub Wrestling. We thought we knew them all, but the "resting-on-your-side pummel" is a new one on us. The brothers are eating Cubby Porridge made of fresh goat’s milk, Fox Valley Bear Milk Replacement Formula, and Gerber baby rice cereal. It’s the breakfast of champions! 🐻🐻🥣🥣

The cubs next door were up late, trashing their room and each other. Jellybean, the largest cub in residence, is a pretty good climber, but he can’t stick the landing…unless it’s on his noggin, which it so often is. Daisy Mae and her brother are in almost constant rounds of fisticuffs, and we wonder (again!) how mother bears do it. Really. How? 🤔 The cubs are offered the same menu as brothers Shadow and Casper, and eat heartily, probably expending the calories they consume by beating the porridge out of their roommates. If play is learning, then these guys are scholars. 🐻🎓🐻 🎓🐻🎓

Last night, Peeps, our smallest cub, decided Baby Not-a-Polar Bear (BNAPB) was making too much noise and kicked him out of her Cub Cave. She had words with him after breakfast, then went back to bed. She sleeps a lot but is eating her Cubby Porridge, taking her vitamins, and using her Climby Thing to practice. Good little bear! 🐻 🐻‍❄️

ABR Daily Update-April 14, 2024-Our Six Cubs 🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻

Weather: 69F (21C) Humidity 46%, Sunny 🌞

We have six two-month-old black bear cubs in residence:

Peeps Bear - Female - The Recovery Center - Rooms #1 & #2

Daisy Mae Bear - Female - Hartley House - Room #2
Duke Bear - Male - Hartley House - Room #2
Jellybean Bear - Male - Hartley House - Room #2

Casper Bear - Male - Hartley House - Room #1
Shadow Bear - Male - Hartley House - Room #1

Peeps, our smallest and youngest cub, likely born near the end of the range of probable cub birthdates (January to mid-February), is doing well. Now that she’s out of The Cub Nursery and in larger rooms, Peeps has the space to show the curators what she can do. They’re watching to see if her strength and coordination improve over time, signifying continued, albeit later, development. The vets from UTCVM-University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine took a look at Peeps when they were at the facility for Twinkle and Tinsel’s release (bless our yearlings, wherever they are. 🐻🐻), and agreed Peeps is too small and wobbly to meet any of the cubs at this time. There’s no doubt the rowdy monsters in Hartley House are right on track; they’re all over the place, up and down. They eat like horses and play like devils, born as they were with The Rules of Cubby Fight Club written in their genes: First Rule: There are no rules. Mad as hatters, they are, mad as hatters.

At present, Peeps is content with her own company, and we hope with continued progress, she’ll meet Casper and Shadow soon.

So love ABR’s smile-and laugh-inducing explanations and commentary. I often visit when I just need a smile! (Of course, the cubbies are a real attraction, too!)

To whoever writes the commentary (Ben?): I just love it❣️ You have such an engaging style, caring and factual, with the right amount of humor thrown in. I think it makes our attachment to these bears even greater. Thank you for doing this for the cubs—and us.

April 13, 2024: Just The Cubs

Twinkle and Tinsel Bear are back in the wild where they belong. Now, there are six cubs of the year at Appalachian Bear Rescue. Six cubs of the year = CHAOS! And Daisy Mae, Duke, Jellybean, Peeps, Casper and Shadow don't disappoint! Enjoy the video of cubbies at play.

Thank you for posting this video of our beautiful cubs. Glad to see that Shadow and Casper got to move to a bigger “apartment”. Little Peeps still has some work to do on her coordination skills but she will get there. Jellybean, Daisy Mae and Duke seem to be well settled in as well. I pray that Tinsel and Twinkle did well during their first hours back in the wild. 🙏🏻🐻♥️🐻♥️🐻♥️🐻♥️🐻♥️🐻♥️

Thank you so much for sharing this precious video of all 6 Bear Cubs! 🧸🩷🧸🩵🧸🩵🧸🩷🧸🩵🧸🩵 It is good to see them all playing and learning to do bear things. 😍 Continue prayers that they all get stronger! 🙏 I miss seeing Twinkle 🐻and Tinsel Bear 🐻 but I'm also glad that they're out in the wild where they do belong. May God protect them out there in the Nature. 🙏

Thanks for the video of the cubbies, love watching them with all that energy. Miss Twinkle and Tinsel though, can't help it, it's like they were apart of my life for awhile. I found myself talking about them last night at ten o clock when my hubby and I took our dog for his walk before bedtime. I pray they live long and safe.
