Farewell from Patternry

Dear Customers,

After 9 years of building and supporting Patternry, we have decided to shut down the service. We have spent a lot of time and effort during the years to make Patternry fit our customers needs. However, for the last few years we haven’t had the time and dedication Patternry would have required. Web technologies come and go very fast and large redesign would have been required. Therefore, we decided now it is time to let go and say thank you to everyone who supported us on our journey.

What this means to you?

We’ll keep patternry.com up and running at least until March 31. You can download you content as pdf from each pattern. In case you need help with exporting your content, reply to this email and let us know.

Thanks and goodbye,
Janne and Matti from Patternry

We are very sorry for the downtime, but we’re coming back stronger

On Friday 12th May, Patternry.com was down most of the day due to an unexpected maintenance work at our data center. At 7:15pm GMT on the same day all services were restored.

Our goal is 100% uptime and every interruption in the service is unacceptable. Once again we apologize and we’ll take all the steps needed to make sure this doesn’t happen again. Thanks for your patience!

If you have any questions about this outage, drop us a note at support@patternry.com

Best,

Janne Lammi, CEO

New enhanced full screen code editor

Today we launched the brand new full screen code editor which makes writing HTML, CSS and JavaScript so much easier and faster. Now when editing a pattern with code you will see a “Full screen”-element next to the normal editor which takes you to full screen mode.

In full screen you can see all the elements at the same time: HTML, CSS, JavaScript and live preview of the results, making it a lot easier to tweak your code. This is especially helpful when your code is more complex.

As always we’d appreciate your feedback and suggestions!

Support for SCSS & Sass + a bunch of UX improvements!

Patternry now supports all the major CSS preprocessors: SCSS, Sass & LESS! CSS preprocessors help you write reusable, programmatic CSS as you create interactive examples for your front-end style guide / UX pattern library.

Using CSS preprocessors

To add a preprocessor to your pattern, edit your pattern and choose “CSS” tab from the code editor. From the bottom of the editor panel you can choose your favourite preprocessor (or still use plain CSS). Preprocessors work also with CSS templates.

UX improvements to smoothen the experience

In addition to this we spend a lot of time improving the UX of Patternry: improved pattern editor, simplified pattern library view, more efficient use of space in the main views and so on.

Use Angular Material with your interactive patterns

Also, we created an example how you can use external CSS & JavaScript frameworks with your patterns / style guide. Take a look at Sign-in form-example which demonstrates using Angular Material with your patterns.

Using Angular Material with your patterns

Angular Material is an Angular-native, UI component framework from Google, Since Patternry supports using any external CSS or JavaScript framework, Angular Material is supported too. To get you started with it, we made an example pattern which demonstrates how to use it. Take a look!

The all new Patternry is out

Inspired by all the feedback and discssions with our customers, we went back to the drawing board to figure out how to make Patternry support better designers’ and developers’ needs. The result? The most important update to Patternry yet.

New, more flexible pattern editor

Pattern editor will be a lot more powerful than the current one. It comes with a rich text editor, something similar to Gmail and WordPress, making it a lot easier to manage content. At the same time we discontinued pattern templates-concept as the same things can be done with the new editor in a more simple way.

image

Making it easy to use HTML, CSS & JS with your patterns

We rebuilt the code editor from the ground up to make it more reliable and smooth to work with. This update makes Patternry more powerful tool for developers to use.

image

Library view

Pattern libraries are where you add and organize your patterns. We visualized the hierarchy of pattern libraries and made it easier to navigate between libraries and sub-libraries.

Search

We changed our search engine to a more powerful one and tweaked how the search works.

Try Patternry now

To celebrate the new Patternry we are extending our free trial to 60-days for a limited time. Give it a try! In case you want to restart trial to your existing account, let us know by replying to this email.

Coming Soon: The All New Patternry

Inspired by all the feedback and discussions with our customers, we went back to the drawing board to figure out how to make Patternry support better designers’ and developers’ needs. The result? The most important update to Patternry yet.

New, more flexible pattern editor

Pattern editor will be a lot more powerful. It comes with a rich text editor, making it a lot easier to manage content. At the same time we will discontinue pattern templates-concept as you can do the same things with the new editor as with templates but more smoothly.

image

Making it easier to use HTML, CSS & JS with your patterns

You can already use markup and JavaScript with the patterns, but after the update it gets even more simple. The code editor will be completely redesigned and we are making using external CSS and JavaScript frameworks easier.

Viewing pattern libraries

Pattern libraries are where you add your patterns. You can make library private and reveal it to your team whenever you are ready. We make a lot of visual changes in the pattern library view to make it better fit designers’ and developers’ needs. Manage Libraries There will be a new, more efficient way to edit libraries. You’ll see all the patterns in the library and available patterns at a glance.

image

Dashboard

There will be more actions that will be shown on the dashboard so it will look more alive in the future. We will also add the 3 recently updated libraries there.

Search

Soon you can search within a pattern library and within the whole workspace. We also improved the way how search results are displayed.

Interested in beta testing?

We are setting up a beta environment for selected customers. Let us know if you would like to be a beta tester.

The need for speed: Patternry just got faster

Few days ago we launched several improvements to Patternry:

1. Search is significantly faster

We made some significant changes to the search implementation and it is now multiple times faster.

2. Images load faster

There were some performance issues when pattern contained a lot of images, which is now fixed.

3. We changed our authentication system

From now on we use OpenID Connect as our authorization framework. It is developed and used by companies like Google, Microsoft, Salesforce and several other companies and organizations. This change doesn’t require any action from you.

We are also currently working on the next version of Patternry. We are redesigning the pattern editor and simplifying the writing process. It also includes a major visual redesign. More news on that soon!

5th Anniversary - Patternry keeps getting better

We have spent the last five years to make Patternry the best tool for building living UI pattern libraries. Here’s a summary of recent improvements:

New Design

image

We redesigned Patternry website to make it easier to understand what Patternry is all about. Take a look!

Nested Libraries

This was one of the most requested features for Patternry and we were happy to get it done. From now on you can create sub-libraries that gives you better control on how to organize your content. You can also drag-and-drop the libraries to organize them in a way you want. Read more.

Email Notifications for Comments

Communication and collaboration is now easier in Patternry. When a new comment is posted to a pattern, an email notification is sent to everyone in the workspace who can see that pattern.

Drafts

Pattern libraries can now be set as drafts. Draft libraries and any patterns in them are now only visible to admin users. This helps admins to manage the content regular users see, and gives time to finish your patterns before publishing them.

Support for LESS

A lot of people requested the ability to use LESS in HTML patterns. We were happy to add the support making it possible to use LESS with your patterns.
