Italian Mixology and Small Bites Take Shape at Bar Toscana

Elizabeth Daniels 12/10

On Friday Bar Toscana, a modern offshoot of Northern Italian abode Toscana in Brentwood, publicly debuted next door to its 21 year-old older sibling. The space, inspired by urban Milan, embodies a collaboration between designer/owner Amy Gordon, architect Hagy Belzberg and installation artist Jennifer Steinkamp with its sleek lines and glossy surfaces, juxtaposed against raw exposed brick.

Kick back, relax, order from a short selection of stuzzichini (small plates priced between $7-$16) like eggplant caviar, tomato jam and artichoke spread served with toast; baked polenta croutons with gorgonzola fondue and shaved black truffles; or prosciutto with shaved fennel and vanilla infused olive oil. Pair the aforementioned with vino off the Italian-centric list (there are a few Cali selections), or opt for an Italian cocktail ($12-$16) off the seasonal menu.

Bar manager William Perbellini and consultant Francesco Lafrancon are mostly responsible for creations such as the signature Sorriso made with gin, pear-infused vodka, oloroso sherry, Luxardo cherry brandy, aromatic bitters and citrus peel; ToscaRita comprised of tequila, Villa Massa orancello, fresh lime, agave nectar, Grand Marnier-blood orange foam, Sicilian orange peel and sea salt; and Via Veneto a mix of Cinzano Bianco, Poli Miele, fresh verbena, lemon and soda. One will also find interpretations of the usual suspects like a Negroni, Bellini, and Sazerac. Look out for barman Nick Liberato (Comme Ca) a few night a week mixing and muddling his way through Italy.
