THE CAMERON STONE
If you’re a fan of piping history and happen to be in Inverness, walk to the “Auld Kirk” (the Old High Church) on St. Michael’s Mount overlooking the River Ness. In a secluded corner beneath a tree you’ll find the gravestone of the Cameron family, one of piping’s most distinguished families.
Here we find the final resting place of the great Donald Cameron (1810-68), his father Colin and mother Mary, his son Alexander (Sandy) (1848-1923) and Donald’s wife Margaret MacKenzie, a.k.a. Maggie Cameron (1818-1877). It’s a historic spot and very few of the scores of pipers who travel to the Northern Meeting in Inverness each year even know it’s there. Pay it a visit if you get the chance!
