Gmote Firewall Issue

I look forward to a functional version of this app sometime soon. I tried out the 'BETA' ability to stream the music to my phone without a hitch, but that was with my Firewall down.

Let me know if there's anything I can do to assist you sort out this issue for other users.

Hi Paul,

What's the best way to check of other applications on my laptop that
could be using said port? I keep fairly minimal processes running.
I did add a rule to my firewall to leave port 8889 open to continue
trying it out for the time being, but would not like to use that for
the long run.

By firewall, do you mean the windows firewall or router firewall?

Haha, I hope I don't over complicate this. I'm not too computer savvy.

I am currently running the Gmote application from my laptop. My laptop
is connected via a wireless router to VIOS. I use Windows firewall and
allowed Gmote as an exception (per FAQ) to no avail. I then added a
port via the exceptions tab under Windows firewall to listen to the
8889 port. I read though that this is not the safest use as the risk
is much higher.

My G1 is setup to listen for Wifi on my home computer's wireless
router when in range, otherwise it will connect via 3G. I've only
given the Gmote a go within my house so I'm assuming it is only
working with the Wifi as of right now. I'd like to be able to use the
Beta (streaming) function and listen to my music from my computer on
my phone so whichever route to go from here I'd hope you can advise.

Check to see if port 8889 is open.

1. go to http://www.pcflank.com/scanner1.htm and start the port test.
2. use the TCP connect scanning (standard).
3. Select the Scan desired Ports and/or the range of ports. Put 8889
as the port. select continue.
4. the scan takes a minute or two.
5. there are a few options. Closed, open, and stealthed.
You want it to be stealthed. If its closed, your firewall is not
configred correctly. If its open, then it is not secure.


I've found that there are usually two things you will need to add to
the firewall exception list on some computers. The GmoteServer.exe and
the Javaw.exe


Lets check your firewall settings.

1. Go to the Control Panel, Windows Firewall, change settings.
2. Select the Exceptions tab.
You should see a list of programs. Scroll down until you see
GmoteServer. If it is not there, lets add it.
a. Click the Add Program button. a new window will appear.
Click the Browse button. Browse to the Gmoteserver.exe. This is
typically at c:\program files\GmoteServer\GmoteServer.exe.
Select the EXE, Press OPEN, and then OK.
3. Click on the GmoteServer and select the Properties button.
4. A New window will appear. Click on the Change Scope button
5. Make sure the option "Any Computer (including those on the
internet)" is selected.

6. fine the "Java(TM) plateform SE Binary" in your Exception list. if
it is not there, you will need to add it.
a. Click the Add Program Button, A new window will appear.
Click the Browse button. Browse to the Javaw.exe. Every system is
slightly different on the location. Try looking at C:
\program files\java. from here you will see a folder(s) of the java
version you have.
it will be similiar to "jre1.6.0_07" if there is more than
one folder here, select the one with the highest version number.
For example "jre1.6.0_10" is higher than "jre1.6.0_07"
open the folder and within that folder is another folder
named "BIN" open that and find the "JAVAW.EXE". Select the EXE,
Press Open, and then OK.
7. Click on the "Java(TM) plateform SE Binary" and select the
Properties button.
8. A New window will appear. Click on the Change Scope button
9. Make sure the option "Any Computer (including those on the
internet)" is selected.

10. Apply the Firewall Settings


Lets check to see if port 8889 is being used by another program. Try
this first when the Gmote Server is NOT running

1. open a command window.
2. type in netstat
3. look in the Local Address field for an IP followed by ":8889"
4. If you see that there and GmoteServer is NOT running, then you will
need to find out what program is using that port.
5. If you do not see the port there, Open the GmoteServer program and
run "Netstat -a". You should now see the port and the stat
will be listed as "LISTENING"


If it is listed as Listening, try to connect your G1 now.

hope this helps.

I forgot to add...

If you see that port 8889 is in use and the GmoteServer is NOT
running... run the following command to find out what is using the
port

on the command line, run "netstat /b"

you will see a list of every port on your computer that is currently
in use and the program that is using it. find port 8889 and find the
EXE.

Followed that procedure step by step.

Looks like we're in business. I think the thing that held me up was
the Java exception (might add that to the FAQ).
I noticed it pop up once under Windows firewall to 'block/unblock' and
clicked unblock, but even set as an exception it warned me (after I
followed your procedure).

I am having issues as well, I have tried all the previous methods. I ran a debug and it just sets there when it gets to listening on port 8889. I have tried to access it with phone but will not connect. I have a suspicion it is my wireless network as I have gotten it to work in another location before.
