Editorial Reviews

Review

It is a love letter of sorts, but without the syrup and sap. And the tears. What separates it from the well-worn genre of fathers and offspring bonding is gender.
--Philadelphia Inquirer

As much a meditation on fathering girls as it is on sports, Strauss puts neither girl on a pedestal; turning phrases about life in "a land of $25 T-shirts and $28 shorts" that leave readers longing for overtime. --New Jersey Monthly

"Daddy's Little Goalie" breaks the mold...delightful, a breeze to read, and filled with the kind of love that will have you crying and laughing. --Buzz Bissinger, author of "Friday Night Lights" and "Three Nights in August"

He tells the bittersweet story of his girls' athletic exploits with style, sympathy and what you need when your kids hit the field -- a sense of humor. --Ben Yagoda, author of "Memoir: A History" and "About Town: The New Yorker and the World It Made"

Strauss may have been the worst hockey player at Carleton College, but in "Daddy's Little Goalie" he proves he is a world-class father and storyteller. --Ray Didinger, member of the National Football Hall of Fame writers' wing

Bought this for a friend, and then read it myself although I'm not really the audience. And I still managed to get something out of it. Strauss tells some wonderful stories about raising his daughters to be respectful, competent athletes and human beings.

I got this book as a father's day present to myself. My six soon to be seven year old daughter is entering strange world of competitive soccer. So I was curious what insights this book might share as to what is in store for me. As the author points out this isn't a guide for how to turn your daughter into the next sports star. However, what it does do is give you something to relate to. Many of his observations I could relate I see mentioned in the book. Most of them on the funny side, like the awkwardness around other parents when your child is doing well. You don't want to be the braggart "that's my girl" even if in your head that is what you are thinking, and instead start complementing all the other players. He also made me laugh out loud when going over the amount of forms youth soccer clubs make you fill out. I can remember filling out a postcard size form to play baseball as a kid. Not so with kids soccer, I had to fill a huge packet, so much so they even had a parent meeting just help everyone fill it all out correctly.
Besides the many funny moments there are just many touching moments as well, perhaps only a parent can relate to. The bond he has formed with his daughters through sports for one, but also the moment of sadness when he knows his oldest daughter's competitive sports career is coming to an end. Overall I enjoyed this book a lot, it has been a while I have read a book cover to cover in a day. Perhaps sometimes he might go on little too much in the details about his daughters but you really can't blame a dad for doing that. The only thing I would have liked to seen is he would have gone on more about is his daughter's college essay at the end. He touched on it a little , perhaps it was too personal to go into more detail.

Now 7 years have passed since I read this book. My daughter continues to play soccer and is doing very well. The only thing is some of the things we have experienced never really are mentioned in the book. It makes you wonder how much youth sports might have changed over the years. I still would recommend this book today as I did back in 2011

Robert Strauss is one of those natural born storytellers who can turn "hello" into an essay that is filled with funny anecdotes that will keep you laughing far after he's done. In this book about the trials and tribulations of watching his daughters -- Ella and Sylvia -- grow up and play sports, particularly basketball, the sport he loves most, Strauss is at his insightful, amusing and whimsical best.

As a sports writer for 19 years I can tell you that many "sports" books fail to connect with readers who can never really relate to the physical or mental abilities it takes to succeed at a high level. But this ain't one of those books. "Goalie" grabs at your heart right from the beginning and the stories Strauss tells about Ella, Sylvia, himself and his wife Sue are nothing if not poignant. If don't get a lump to your throat reading this book, you've never been the parent of a child playing sports, never reveled in their success, never felt the paranoia and anger and agony of watching them ride the bench, never dried their tears after a heartbreaking loss.

Get this book. Give it as a gift to your dad, or your uncle, or someone who has made a difference in your life. They'll love it and they'll love you all the more.

This is a funny, tender memoir of a geek dad with two jock daughters.

Wonderfully written, very conversational, I can hear the author's voice in my head.

Book was on front table at Barnes & Noble. Picked it up in the aisle there and couldn't put it down. Felt compelled to buy it.

It really is hilarious and wise. Perfect read for summer weekends. Would make great gift for Father's Day.

This is a book for Moms too! My daughter isn't even in sports but I loved following the journey of Ella and Sylvia -- and their Dad -- on the athletic fields of Haddonfield. All parents will relate to this. This is the antidote to the Tiger Mom -- the Kitten Dad.
