  11. This song remains an absolute banger—perfect for an unruly spring evening.

  12. tuneage:

Florence & The Machine - “Kiss With A Fist”

Florence & The Machine is Florence Mary Leontine Welch, and a backing band that seems to vary from show to show (currently Dev Hynes of Lightspeed Champion).

This track typifies Florence’s sound: a haunting, captivating voice and a bluesy sensibility that draws comparison with the likes of Kristin Hersh and Amy Winehouse, topped off with a whole load of attitude. It was released as a single on Moshi Moshi Records in the UK and IAMSOUND Records in the US, a week ago. Also worth checking out is her cover of Cold War Kids’ “Hospital Beds”, which can be streamed on her MySpace, that she frequently opens her sets with.

She’s currently working on her debut album with Kid Harpoon. You’ll also find her at this year’s Glastonbury Festival, and various other venues throughout the UK (all listed on her MySpace) after that.

Remember in 2008 when we covered Florence before her first album?

How do you all discover new music these days?

  13. tuneage:

Are we in a new golden age for dance videos? Here, Kiesza gives us gorgeous choreography performed in a single take for “Hideaway.” It’s the classically trained Canadian ballerina’s debut single, filmed with a broken rib, before debuting at the top of the UK singles chart last month.

With Arcade Fire’s recent entry into the genre, the continuing reign of Beyonce and Justin Timberlake, plus upcoming releases from dance vid queen Robyn, and even a posthumous album from genre originator Michael Jackson, it seems the long tradition of getting down in front of a camera is on a rise.

    This song still whips ass

I just need a little 2022-but-make-it-80s-synth escapism these days

(these two singles are from an EP by Hether Fortune called Sober Karaoke—the first one will get stuck in your head as if its existed for 30 years)

  15. tuneage:

This entire album is layered with Stronae’s intricate albeit to create extended metaphors through sound and lyricism.

I think why people like me and French teachers love Stromae is because of his incredibly playful and deft use of language.

This song, for example? The chorus literally includes the French words for “poopoo” (caca) and “peepee” (pipi), it also talks about vomiting. It’s also about the joy of fatherhood, and his affected high voice, against the tones of a xylophone and hand-claps. It’s catchy, it’s light, it’s silly.

This song is more emblematic if the kind of music we’re used to seeing from Stromae—beautiful instrumentation and vocals against coarse, raw lyrics. He reflects on the way the world perceives mothers, and how that refracts back on children. With elegant strings, he embeds beauty as he sings of the ugly sins of our world.
