What's it like at Claviere (Vialattea) resort?

Claviere, in Italy (in the Piemonte region), is a large resort with 12 lifts (6 chair lifts, 6 surface lifts) that offers skiers an incredible 1473 metres (4833 feet) of vertical descent. Claviere has 19 pistes. Claviere is best suited to intermediate skiers and snowboarders but there is some terrain for beginners and advanced skiers. There are 16 kilometers (10 miles) of cross country ski trails at Claviere. A small proportion of the pistes at Claviere are covered by snowmaking. The closest airport is at Turin but the transfer time is 1.5 hours. The nearest train station to Claviere is at Oulx. There is accommodation located close to the pistes but we would welcome additional information about any hotels or chalets in Claviere.

Information, received during Feb 2014, states that it is now a long walk (instead of skiing) to the base on the Miramonti side of the ski area. This is due to the Les Montquitaine lift being moved a considerable distance from its original site.

Richard Vile from United Kingdom writes:

We stayed at The Grande Claviere over Christmas 2012. Two adults and two children (aged 11 and 9). This was the kids second week on the snow after a couple of missed seasons.

Obviously, the snow for the entire 2012/2013 season appeared to be brilliant wherever you went in Europe but here was no exception. The skiing was good and plenty for all abilities if you had a Via Lattea pass. The skiing, in Montegenevre next door, encompassed a larger area with generally more challenging runs.

The Crystal hotel was, quite simply, brilliant; charming and helpful staff (mainly very young); superb food and comfortable. It was a walk to the lifts, but not too far, especially when you found the route through the car park.

To sum up, we all loved it so much we're going back next Christmas (2013).
