Example of an essay on violence in the media

by David Somerfleck (Essay writer who works on EssayHub research paper writing service)

For years, "Shane" was the pinnacle, one of my favorite films and if you'd asked me, I (probably) wouldn't be able to say why. It seems so simple a plot; the characters so stereotypical and their lives two-dimensional. But then again, isn't that why I liked it so much? Because it reinforced what I'd already held to be ineluctable truisms for so long?

But, you know, then again, for years, I also bought into the mirage-mythos of urban, middle-class culture that "more is better" and the hollow belief echoed in the now-immortalized (and graspingly pathetic) bumper-sticker "whoever has the most toys at the end of the game wins."

I swallowed the illusion that "Shane" represented a real and attainable glamour when it was only a simple fable of adolescent posturing peopled with names attached to societal roles. I thought lurching after more "toys" would somehow engender me to Meaning, and I paid the bitter price of loneliness and pissed-off desperation for something I could neither name nor find.

So what do old westerns and false ideas have to do with you, you ask? I have a few toys on the shelf for you, too, kiddos. Try these: Ruby Ridge, Waco, the bombing in Oklahoma City, the "Freemen," the Unabomber, the murder of Matthew Shephard (you know, the young gay man who was beaten to a pulp and left draped over a barbed wire fence in Wyoming), the murder of a man named Byrd (who was actually dragged by a car until there was literally nothing left of him to defile anymore), and of course, 9/11. Go ahead and grab all you want. There are more being stocked on the shelves all the time.

Each of these horrendous incidents bears its own idiosyncratic brand, its own dark story; but they all have the common thread of fear metempsychosed into hate. It seems that many people living in the West still live in the simple, chiaroscuro western films of their simpler, more idealized childhoods.

I wasn't the only one seeing more in "Shane" and similar characters than was present. A whole slew of poor suckers bought the charade the media, the Establishment, and our folks shoveled down our throats with unconscious élan. Remember Reagan, commonly referred to by foreigners as "John Wayne in the White House"? Don't you think it's time someone took back the damaged goods?

What most everyone has overlooked are the trees lurking behind the forest. You won't hear it on the news, because it's not sensationalistic trivia or pabulum: The commonalities are that all of these incidents revolved around men or (in the case of the recent outburst of school shootings) boys, and they all concern incongruent anachronistic outcasts without voices.

Boys are raised in our still-tribal society to be practical, obdurate, extroverted, conquering factotums. Boys are discouraged, ridiculed, ostracized (and often worse) for expressions of any empathy or deviation from the accepted norm. Once boxed into that corner, there are no outlets; no exits. The only commonly accepted forms of expression for boys (and men) are aggressive in nature.

I don't know about you, but if I had a son (like one of those "trench coat mafia" kids) who had enough ammo in his room to level Iraq all over again, I'd call the cops muy pronto.

If one of my kids gleefully slaughtered innocents by the dozen at a local school and followed it up with suicide, I'd be just a little bit concerned about my abilities as a responsible parent. Gee, I'd probably even want to say something to an understandably stunned populace; something to the effect of accepting some minor degree of responsibility for being a bad parent. I'd feel guilty, responsible, and repentant.

What kind of family knows one of its own has bombs and rifles at home and does nothing? The same type of family that refuses to accept culpability for the consequences of ignoring the obvious for too long. Do these parents feel any need to make amends... maybe by trying to offer their condolences to the families of those killed, or by trying to help make sure this tragedy doesn't repeat itself by talking to parents' (or teens') groups?

Perhaps some of the parents of these teens have tried to make amends or understand the tragedy in their wake, in their own way. However, the trend nonetheless continues along its logical, cold, destructive path eating all who can't or won't see it slithering in the wet grass.

Don't blame movies, or video games, or rap music for violence in America; blame the politicians who make it harder and harder to live in comfort. The causes of violence go beyond gender or exposure to media outlets.

It cuts right to the marrow of our collective skeletal structure. For years we've heard and read that the "nuclear" family is a relic of the past. Now both parents (usually) have to work just to make any headway. This is the sickening result of G.O.P.-heralded "Reaganomics" and now Bush supply-side "What-Me-Worry" economics: the divide between the rich and poor widens as families (except the rich) disintegrate while Affirmative Action slowly dissolves, and the middle class watches as what it used to take for granted is stolen bit by bit.

Teachers in most states are "trained" in what's commonly referred to as the "sink or swim" model; you either figure everything out on your own or you end up quitting or suffering a nervous break-down. The pay is competitive with what anyone in retail management could easily earn. Obviously, education is one of the nation's lowest priorities - and politicians don't acknowledge what they're not forced to. The public is too drawn to "sexy" policies that can be easily understood, like declaring war on unarmed countries.

Children are given more books to carry around schoolyards than a pack-mule could endure, they're given more hours of regurgitating "homework" than any adult would or could even pretend to be capable of; emotionally crippled by unrelenting peer pres-sure to conform, bombarded with commercials in school and at home, assaulted with more responsibilities and information than someone with multiple personalities trying to decipher tax codes. Is it any wonder why the headlines read the way they do?

The shock isn't that violence is a commonly accepted form of communication among males, both young and old, or even that so many males feel the need to lash out at the Unknown - it's that we can see the signs and watch the patterns unfold; and honestly throw our hands up in despair claiming ignorance, looking for absolution in the belief that we aren't a part of this raging entropy.
