Shaolin temple bell rings in a box office fortune

||-2 February 2011-||

The new Benny Chan directed kung fu drama, Shaolin, starring Andy Lau, Nicholas Tse and Jackie Chan, has opened across Asia to rave reviews and blockbuster box office.

The film, the first authorised by the Shaolin authorities, has so far grossed RMB 150m (US 22m) in Mainland China, and has enjoyed equal success around the region.

The director himself expressed appreciation that the film, which focusses on drama and spirituality as well as sheer martial artistry, had been accepted by audiences who might have been expecting a retread of the 19 Jet Li classic Shaolin Temple film.

Critics haved observed that, besides featuring the expected superlative kung fu fighting, the film also provides great dramatic roles for Lau and Tse, and also, in his supporting role, for Jackie Chan.

Shaolin will be distributed in the UK by Cine Asia.
